building my cube 30x30x30

well I'm designing my cube and this is what I have come up with.
30x30x30 1/2"
2" euro bracing around
over flow box in the middle of the tank on the back pane at the top with 2 holes drilled for 2 durso' 1.5" pvc. if You see wnything wrong with it please let me know, should I have a smaller over flow box say 8x6x6 or 6x6x6

how about going external for overflow?

Why not have an external overflow? I'm just asking......

If I were to custom design a tank - I would seriously consider this - gives more room in the tank.

Skimmerking 01-05-2008 11:34 PM

Yeah I thought about it, but I am thinking the weight of the overflow on the back? Does it need any extra bracing? If anyone has any pics of an external overflow, please post them.

Thanks,
Mike

i've got an external overflow box, it has no extra bracing.

I think the external would be neat Mike and easy to do as the tanks being built. My problem with it is the amount of rear space needed but would it be much more than,s required for the pipes you have drawn? If I was doing that I would install a single 2in. overflow, similar to the one I have in my 45 cube.

Skimmerking 01-06-2008 02:05 AM

yeah DOug a single 2" would be alot easier I think. time to revamp the tank again

Are you actually going to build this tank yourself?

If so....... a photo pictorial would be cool.

I've always wanted to build a tank :)

Cheers,

No Vic I'm going to have a guy build it for me ,since I will be in Afghanistan. So when I get back I will pick it up on my summer leave in Jul.

I hope you have a safe tour over in Afghanistan.

Be safe.

I'm thinking about Starfire for the tank too. But I know it scratches so easy. What does everyone who have starfire do to clean their tank.

Der_Iron_Chef 01-06-2008 06:13 AM

Wait...starphire scratches more easily than regular float glass?

Wiedertäufer 01-06-2008 06:32 AM

I don't think it actually scratches more easily but the higher clarity makes scratches more obvious.

Skimmerking 01-06-2008 02:17 PM

the starfire is more softier then regular glass ,due to the Iron that has been left out in the starfire. That is what makes it so much clearer to see through. The scratches being more visible has nothing to do with it... iron in the glass allows the glass to have a special hardness to it .

That has been floating around for a long while, but I've seen the manufactuere (PPG) quoted elsewhere as saying "Starphire glass has the same surface hardness as float glass". Has there been any objective testing? This is purely idle interest on my part, neither having nor planning any starphire tanks.
