HEATER FAILED AGIAN! Any brand/style recommendations?
Well this is the second heater that has now failed on me cooking my tank,
I had woke up this morning noticing that my BTA had moved being in a rush to get to work i didn't check anything on the tank once i got home i checked it out and the nem wasn't looking so good (as if its insides were coming out its mouth) So after cooling down the tank (+35) I had read a little bit on it and had learned that it can still be saved so i poped it in the 75 gal and its looking much better now i placed it ontop of the rock and it moved under a rock its fully open but hiding under a ledge not really any light or flow there any ideas? ANYWAYS so this is my second heater failing taking out some of my live stock any suggestions on a style/brand that was worked well for you? |
i have 2 ebo-jagers, one on my cichlid tank and one on my reef tank, and i must say that I've never had a problem with those heaters since day one. durable accurate and not too pricy imo-
and assuming you set it correctly it holds a steady temperature, i came home from a 10-day vacation, to find an inch of evaporation and still a solid temperature of 27 degrees celc. |
I second the ebo jagers. Theyve been running pretty good for me in the past 6 months. The only problem that Ive had is the suction cups failing but that can be fixed easily. Other that its been very accurate.
|
sorry thats one thing i forgot to mention, the suction cups are really annoying to adjust to the glass, and assuming you do not break the heater while attaching the suction cups it should serve you a long time...
|
i didn't find any thing for that exactly only by the name of Jager
http://www.bigalsonline.ca/BigAlsCA/...rheater250watt This the same brand? |
yeah it's the same thing. here's my vote for the mick jager :) heaters. Ive used a few visitherm stealth heaters as well and they've been great for me too.
|
Never depend on suction cups. Never. Eventually, they will let you down.
Assume that your heater thermostats will eventually fail. Limit your risk by using 2 or more (undersized) heaters. It is extremely unlikely that they will all fail at the same time and failure in one won't be enough to kill your tank. |

And im moving to a 85(Including sump) In a few weeks so what wattage of heats and how many? Im really sick of loosing fish and corals because my heater screwed up... |

yup thats the one, runs like a charm, i have a 150-watt ebo-jager on my 33 gallon, so i'm thinking a 250-watt for you would do it, it says that 250-watts are for tanks up to 90 gallons so ya- |
I'd take untamed's advice and go for two or even three smaller Ebo Jagers rather than one big one. On my 150 gallon system I run two 150s and a 250. I'd also try to keep the top of the heater (where the thermostat is) dry and out of the water.
If you really want to be safe, get an external temperature controller which has a much more reliable thermostat and alarms. Here's one example: http://www.jlaquatics.com/phpstore/s...t_ID=ct-pptemp |
I have an Ebo & a cheaper Ebo imitated heater. Both drift with the Ebo being the better of the two. They can be on at 79.5 or off at 78.5. Go figured that. Otherwise they keep it within a couple degree,s. I have never had an Ebo fail myself.
Since adding my RK2, and running the heaters through the controller, my temp varies less than .5 and has a high end shutdown of 79 I few years ago, I used the Ranco controller and it also worked great, except you had to dip the probes. Not sure how they are now. |
I use a method much like that suggest by untamed. I use a controller to control the heaters (as the control within the heater will certainly stick sooner or later). I also use a number of smaller heaters on a power bar controlled by the controller. I set each of the heats to a temperature of 1 to 2 degrees above the temperature of the controller. Thus if the controller happened to stick the maximum the heater would increase the heat is by the difference in the settings. If on the other hand a heater control sticks the controller will shut off the power to the heater at the set temperature.

Heater
I AM USING EBO'S AS WELL BUT I AM TRYING A TITANIUM HEATER NOW IN ONE OF MY TANKS......SO FAR THE TITANIUM HAS BEEN VERY CONSISTANT AND THE PART I LIKE BEST IS THE THERMOSTAT IS OUT OF THE WATER COMPLETELY.
|
I've had two stealth heaters die on me. One just stopped working, the other was leaking current.
The nice thing is marineland was willing to replace them under their lifetime warranty. |
Heater opinion
I am using a single aqua medic 500w titanium heater and external aqua medic electronic controller in my 210. Complete package cost me 115.00$ The heater is in my sump and very consistant. The nice thing is that by having a seperate external controller is that the only way its going to fail is if I break it. The only good heater in my opinion is one that is electronic or solid state (same thing) if it dosn't say any of the later on the package its probably a cheap mechanical bi metal thermostat wich can fuse the contacts together leaving the heater on.

a 250-watt is rated for up to 90 gallons, mind you there strong heaters, i set a 150-watt on my 33 gallon and set it on 26 degrees, when i woke up the next morning it was pushing 30 degrees, scary thought:neutral: |
So two 150's?

Did you get it brand new for $115? where abouts? -Tony |
my tronic 300w heater has been going strong 4 years now:biggrin:

Think relying on a single thermostat is taking a chance. The heater part is usually fine it's the thermostats that are crap.
Get a controller and have either it set at tank temp and the heater slightly higher or the other way around don't really matter. And Tronics are not foolproof, mine 200W failed stuck on. |
I have Jagers in my three fresh water tanks and the stock heater which came with my Red Sea Max for my reef tank. My last Jager was dead-on-arrival (didn't work) so I had to exchange it, but other than that, I'm quite happy with them. They always have maintained a stable temperature that I can count on.
