Any women wearing this thing?

Bras and Breast Cancer
by Ralph L. Reed, Ph.D.
Although I am an environmental chemist (Ph.D in biochemistry), I have been doing a lot of literature research on breast cancer since I saw an article on the National Library of Medicine database over a year ago. That article documented an increase in breast cancer rates between women who do wear bras versus those that do not.

That Harvard study fascinated me and I searched the medical literature for possible explanations. In January 1996, I discovered the book by Singer and Grismaijer and their explanation of impaired lymphatic flow intrigued me. I have since read everything that I can find on lymphatic flow. What I have found has amazed me, but that is another story. I can supply you with lots of info if you like. In essence, what Singer and Grismaijer found was that the odds of getting breast cancer dramatically increased with bra-wearing over 12 hours per day.

Women who wore their bras 24 hours per day had a 3 out of 4 chance of developing breast cancer (in their study, n=2056 for the cancer group and n=2674 for the standard group).

Women who wore bras more than 12 hour per day but not to bed had a 1 out of 7 risk.

Women who wore their bras less than 12 hours per day had a 1 out of 152 risk.

Women who wore bras rarely or never had a 1 out of 168 chance of getting breast cancer. The overall difference between 24 hour wearing and not at all was a 125-fold difference.

Breast disease is only a problem in cultures where women wear bras. Western culture has come to accept bra wearing as normal, and therefore it has been unquestioned as a possible health hazard

Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer are a husband-and-wife research team dedicated to uncovering the lifestyle causes of disease. Medical anthropologists and co-authors of, Dressed To Kill: The Link Between Breast Cancer and Bras (Avery, 1995), "Get It UP!", "Get It OFF!" and "Get It OUT!" (ISCD Press, 2001), this dynamic duo is known worldwide for their willingness to stand up to the profit-oriented, treatment focused medical system.

Kind of makes sense to me, cut the flow to an arm ... how long will it take for it to get sore?
This is a multi Billion $$$ industry, of course they will try to disprove it because they can loose money.

And maybe it's just not true....

michika 09-21-2007 06:36 PM

Bras per say don't cause cancer themselves. Some of the reasons include that cutting off lymphatic circulation doesn't inspire cancer to randomly form. Cancer is mutations within a cell, or cells that eventually develops out of control. While cancer can be caused by many things, carinogens, free radicals, etc. it isn't caused by constriction.

Aquattro 09-21-2007 06:41 PM

what if one were to, say, eat the bra? Maybe that would cause cancer?

0sprey 09-21-2007 06:53 PM

The lymphatic system is used to flush toxins out of certain areas of the body; its like a second circulatory system, just that it flows primarily through passive means (valves, pressure from flexing muscles). If lymphatic circulation is impaired, toxins can and do build up in the tissues. And toxins are linked to cancer.
I'd like to see the paper that claims to disprove that study, rather than just a smug statement.

It was discussed at length in one of my anatomy classes. I don't know if I still have the original papers, but it was a collection of papers searched out from Pubmed, and other various medical databases.

I do however agree with you that toxics can build up. and the link between toxins and cancer.

well guess I'll step up, be the pig and say something inappropriate, how's "just in-case, let the girls be free"

Do The Flames All Wear Bras

Burn the Bra...we tried that in the 60's. Didn't last long enough. We need a new law making all women who wear them criminals!

Oh sure you say that now but wait a few years. Being able to tuck them into your pants would not be a pretty sight you'd be screaming for new laws

I thought maybe the original study was started by some pervert who thinks that all women should swing free in the breeze.

It is too bad we have such an unrealistic image of beauty. Airbrushed and gravity defying is the in thing. Is it any wonder most bras nowadays squwish, mash and push breasts into shapes that are completely unnatural.

let the girls be free they were never ment to be confined any way

marie 09-22-2007 12:36 AM

Obviously no one looks at national geographic anymore, I am glad my "girls" have been incarcerated for the last 30 years. I can still pass the pencil test

Oh wow. I hate to see where this thread could take us. And thank goodness it wasn't about men's undies or anything. I'm not sure if us guys *have* a pencil test, but if we did....not sure I'd be ready to talk about it. LOL.

I think this thread lost its focus a little… My friend, Su-Ellen Mishkie… Okay, serious Paul, NO Seinfeld references….

Ahem.

The thing that I’ve always found with these medical studies is that they really don’t know anything at the beginning, then, after a while, the find the truth somewhere between the extremes…

Don’t eat eggs.
Eat eggs.
Just the whites.

Or perhaps…

Butter.
Margarine.
Just use a little oil.
Okay, eat butter, just a little though.

And now my personal favorite;

Cover yourself in oil and sit in the sun (okay, maybe the medical community never endorsed that one…)
No sun.
Just a little sun, with sun screen.

That said, I have to hand it to this study, it says that it’s okay to wear a bra for less than 12 hours days, so that’s a “Just a little”… The fact of the matter is that in this day and age, everything gives you cancer – mind as well look with your shirt off in the mean time.

- The eternal optimist, Paul.

Johnny Reefer 09-22-2007 07:04 PM

I saw on a show on TV awhile back (sorry, I don't recall which show) that claimed a huge % (sorry, I don't recall the "figure") of women wear the wrong size bra. Wrong size = constriction. Maybe this is the cause for this "studied" link to breast cancer?
