Baby cuttlefish
Picked up an egg a few weeks ago with Anthony and it actually hatched sometime today. Don't ask me what kind it is, I really don't know. I figure if i don't like it after awhile when it gets too big, it will always taste good in some good stirfry.

Haha..that's too cool. What tank are you going to keep it in?
|
Now that is very cool :)
I wish you success with this fish :) Cheers, Vic [veng68] |
It's supposed to be a dwarf cuttlefish. Great that it's eating frzn mysis already. That's super. Hope mine do as well.

Just saw my little baby cuttlefish hiding under a shell. He's soooo cute.
|
Very cool indeed! Where do you buy these eggs?
|
Awe! Very cute!
How old do you think it is? |

yeah its a day old and the hikari mysis was a little too big for it. so I'm going to go get some arctic pods from OA today and feed that to him. I think he will appreciate that more.
It was pretty cool to watch it change colors several times as I was taking photos. it would flash into a burgandy red color and back to white on and off. |
Wow, that's pretty cool. My niece would just love to watch this happen in her little tank. Keep us posted on how it does

The adult we have right night is such a amazing creature and has become quite a attraction for anyone who comes into the store, but by the way it acts i don't think it it likes me very much even though i feed the little guy all the time ,i was going to try and order more eggs hopefully they will be in within a few weeks.

DeadByDawn - do you know the species name of this guy?

Just found some good reading for caring of these animals!

Looks like it might be Sepia bandensis - good news if it is as they get to a maximum of 3-4". I had one for 8-9 months before - it was not a juvenile when I bought it, and yours is a baby so you can expect a longer term with it. Just wait until it gets a little bigger so you can better see it change shape and colour it is amazing to see. There's not a ton of info on keeping these guys (try TONMO), but advice I would give you is to not feed any fresh water fish such as guppies or goldfish when it is bigger. You can train it to take food from a feeding stick after a while. There have been some anecdotal reports of cuttles dieing after being fed guppies and mine did after I had done so - might have been the cause of its demise or it could have been approaching the end of its (short) natural life. They like tanks that are tall and will stay on the rocks, bury themselves in the sand, or hang on the underside of a chaeto (or another macro algae) raft floating at the tank surface.

On a side note... did anyone see the Nature of Things documentary on Cuttlefish?

Cuttlefish eggs
We have lots in stock, both eggs or fry.
|
do they need to be in a species only tank???? are they reef safe???? and how big will they get?
|
yes they do - will try to eat just about anything. They are reef safe since they won't eat corals, but will eat shrimp, crabs, and fish
|
and how big they get is dependent on what species it is... and it's still a bit early to say what it is.
oh man that guy is SO cool. keep us posted. |
