Damsels you will learn are the devil fish. Yes, they are fast fish that love to nip and take off. They are cheap for a reason. But your won't learn to you try for yourself. So go for it.

Yes, honestly our 2 devil damsels (3 striped) would take turns dive bomming our mantis and the mantis would run and hide under the rock. Our mantis is small about 2", is a g-smithi and only eats mysis.

surgeonfish 07-16-2007 05:47 AM

I WOULD AVOID THEM. I got several damsels as "starter fish" but now I don't want them anymore. I spend the last 30 min with a hook and line trying to get 5 domino damsels out of my tank. You think they are normally bad, wait until after they lay eggs every week.

p.s. I caught one within a few minutes (also caught an anthias). Then I think my hook got dull or the fish got smarter. I will try again tomorrow.

bv_reefer 07-16-2007 06:51 AM

haha

-oh man are they that bad?? i decided that I wouldn't get em' last week
but now that u told me about there lil' reproduction schemes they got scheduled there definitely not seeing the living light of my tank ever!

-ight thanx again man...

I love damsels. Much like I love myself. I love myself more than I love most people. People should love damsels. People love me.

How's that for random?

TheReefGuy 07-16-2007 07:43 AM

Thats stupid...lol it is quite so very random......Damsles are evil little dinks.

bv_reefer 07-16-2007 07:57 AM

Rofl
Id figure the mantis would kick the **** of em

Mik_101 07-16-2007 06:35 PM

That is what I thought as well.

albert_dao 07-17-2007 04:43 AM

I've lol'd my share's worth out of this thread.

Anyway, you can always get some of the tamer damsels (tabolt's, starki's, most of the Pomacentrus species) and add them last to your tank if you really wanted a damsel.

bv_reefer 07-17-2007 05:12 AM

mehh

-2 tell u the truth there nuthin' special i just like some of em' like the yellow damsel, talbots, tuxedo and fiji blue devil-

Mik_101 07-17-2007 05:46 AM

After what I heard they do---I HATE DAMSLE FISH!!

surgeonfish 07-17-2007 05:48 AM

I should correct myself. I do have a few species of damsels in my tank which are colorful and seem to be quite docile like the Yellow Tail Damsels. They were the first fish in my tank (used to cycle it) and they are still alive and doing well 2 years later. I have never seen them bother any other fish. However, most of the other 6 species of damsels in my tank are very aggressive.

michika 07-17-2007 04:10 PM

I have a pair of yellow damsels, and they are great fish, no agression, nothing. I've had them since I started my tank.

bv_reefer 07-17-2007 06:27 PM

-yellow damsel

-ya yellow damsels are the only ones i was considering really, although not 2 crazy about how it says ''semi-aggessive'', but did it ever nip even a
lil' bit @ any of ur corals?

michika 07-17-2007 07:36 PM

They never touched, and still don't touch, anything. I've had them with all sorts of LPS, SPS, and amost every type of clam. They've never nipped anything, they don't chastise or chase other fish, very fun fish, always out and about.

bv_reefer 07-17-2007 07:51 PM

-yup

-ya probably gonna go with one of those but thats it no other damsels!
also love the yellow color and there not expensive @ all so ya yellow dam-
sel all the way!

michika 07-17-2007 08:01 PM

These are the damsels I'm taking about, just so we're talking about the same thing:

http://www.peteducation.com/images/a...low_damsel.jpg
or
http://www.underwater.com.au/content...amsel_fiji.jpg

One of mine, who I asume is either male or female has vertical brown-black bars on its dorsal fin. I'm sorry I can't find any good photos of it.

bv_reefer 07-17-2007 08:13 PM

-yup

-yup that's exactly the one I'm talkin' about, the IDEAL reef fish, doesn't
disrupt reef tanks and set-ups, and is peaceful to other tank mates,
and also hardy...works for me.

Mik_101 07-18-2007 07:13 AM

Kind of looks like a mini version of a yellow peel angle. lol.

michika 07-18-2007 03:17 PM

Sort of.

I loved my lemonpeel angel. Definitely one of my most favorite fish that I've ever kept.
