4.4 Gallon Build
I built a tank out of 5mm glass, sanded all edges to make it look nice, and divided it in half with tinted glass. The tank measures 16x8x8.
Here's the divider, will act as a wier/overflow, it's drilled in the middle with a DIY bulkhead http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_0973.jpg Here it is installed in the tank http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_0974.jpg About 5-6 pounds of premium Liverock http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_0986.jpg Empty Display http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_0987.jpg Now with rock in http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_0988.jpg Clearing up http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1007.jpg Full tank shot http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1008.jpg One lonely resident in the Fuge right now http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1011.jpg Tank has been running since Friday, but the water and sand, and some rock came directly from my 55 Reef. So, I'm not anticipating a huge cycle, just waiting for it to become more stable. Eventually it will be home to a fish and a number of inverts, and Corals of course. |
what are you going to use for lighting?

Added the Wife's small Nemo, she doesn't like him cause he nips at her. I don't mind him at all, and I got a Panda Goby to keep him company. The fish aren't posing for pics though.
I'm working on the lighting configuration before building the actual Canopy. I'm pretty sure that I've decided on the bulb placement and reflector shape.......... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1418.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1423.jpg Independent control now, but no timers yet. The cords have switches though......... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1426.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1427.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1425.jpg The reflectors are made from a piece of aluminum duct, pretty shiny on the inside, but I'm gonna work on polishing them to a mirror-like finish. Dropped some frags in to see what they would do. Now I'll be able to tell if the lighting and flow is right. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1430.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1429.jpg Stuff is just kinda thown in there right now, I'll figure out final placement when I see how everything does. The Fuge side is establishing nicely....... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1433.jpg |
I'm impressed with this little tank so far, and the Canopy will be built soon. A couple mishaps; When hooking the lights and pump up to a powerbar I added, I failed to plug in the pump properly, the result was the tank went without ANY circulation for 8+ hours(ALL night). In the morning, I discovered the problem, re-plugged in the pump, and found that NOTHING DIED! Nothing even looked bad. Then last night, I found Nemo on the floor, covered in Cat hair. I scooped him up, dropped him back in, he shed his Cat hair covering, and started swimming around like nothing happened. Hope he learned something, but I'm building the Canopy this week just in case.

Wow looks good and sounds like you have had some luck. I like this idea and am kicking around a 5.5, do you mind a little imitation?

Go right ahead. I did this one to illustrate how a display/refugium system works, it's intended for someone just starting out in Reefing. But, it's more than that, this system really works well. I'm not sure if the sand is working, or if the Macro is enough, but this is a super low nutrient system so far. I can feed a whole cube of frozen Rotifers, with no detectable spike/harm. The glass on the display side stays clean for a week, and in the fuge it needs to be cleaned every few days. It really does work like two different biotopes working in tandem.

Again very nice. And the design seems well thought out.

Pulsing Xenia in this Nano pumps all the time, even at night with lights out.

Did the finishing on the base.
Styrofoam on the inside....... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1590.jpg The bottom is from a drawer of a Coin Collectors Case, and it's some kinda velvet stuff, won't scratch furniture........ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1591.jpg I cut the Styrofoam so that the bottom pane sits just below the edge of the base..... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1597.jpg Corals still doing well........ http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1598.jpg |
Got the top painted, but not clear coated yet. Making the lid look like Swiss Cheese has brought the temp down to 78-80.
Inside.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1614.jpg Outside..... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1615.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1616.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...n/IMG_1618.jpg |
Went fish shopping this evening.......

Neat!
What is the dark (anemone?) in your fuge? |
Tube Anemone, not a "true" Anemone, but nice, and doesn't wander, doesn't need light either.
