Asmodeus's 120 gal Mixed reef.

well I have done it again. Going to be moving tanks again from a 65 gal to a 120 gal. Reason is well i'm a reefer and that is what we do. WEll I hope that is what we do Right DOUG.. Taking after you.

the tank is 48x24x24 5/8' glass rimless with no braces. the tank when it was made had a single overflow with Dual stacks. The reason I know this is because it's my old tank when I started out in 2002 :drinking: ya can you believe it I when back to it again..

OH ya I paid $100 for it

Any thought on if I should make the over flow smaller and have 1 overflow with a return inside the over flow the return is a mag 7.

any ways here are a couple of shots of the 120

Gools 06-02-2007 03:07 AM

Mike, for that size tank I would have gone with at least 1" glass, and a huge centre brace.
I don't thing that gun you fire could break that tank

So what's this one going to be, mixed reef, or just softies?

Skimmerking 06-02-2007 03:23 AM

LOL it's going to be a mixed all contents will be transfered over, along with a foxface, to take care of Bubble algae and I might add a powder brown, or a yellow or purple tang havent decided yet. and i might add 2 leopard wrasses......

untamed 06-02-2007 06:20 AM

I think you are better off with the two holes both being used as overflow. Run the return over the top. Do you know from experience if a single hole can take 100% of the flow you want?

If it can, you can silence the overflow using that 2nd hole.

Skimmerking 06-02-2007 11:16 PM

Well I bought some paint. Going to paint all 3 sides glossy black to keep lots of light in and I like the look of Black too. I'm going to have dual overflow Like Doug and Untamed recommended. I have already put on 2 coats of black paint.

here is the first coat.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02413.jpg

the first coat is like the primer for the rest. here is the second coat starting to come together and fill in nicely.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02415.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02416.jpg

as you look at the overflow holes they are for 1" overflows. the overflow box was huge when I like owned it . Im going to make it smaller might just use normal standpipes.. any input..

mike

crystalz 06-03-2007 05:21 AM

The guys at golds aquarium in calgary have a good silent overflow set up. If you call and speak with them they would probabally email u some pics. Having the return ran above the water level and then into the tank is the safest way to pipe it. On mine I ran the return over the overflow. Then I drilled a hole in the 90 on the return and tapped a small plastic threaded barb adapter in to it. I used some small diameter tubing to keep the water from the barb adapter in the overflow. I secured the tubing just above the water level as a siphon break. works like a charm. No more relying on check valves.

Doug 06-03-2007 01:49 PM

Coming along nice Mike. I used a flat black though. Not sure any difference.

If you did straight stacks, the overflow box would be smaller but for sure, more noise. You could build Stockman stacks. Take up very little room, in comparison to Duraso,s.

Skimmerking 06-03-2007 10:35 PM

Here is the bare bones of the stand 3/4" plywood for the top and the bottom. 4x4's on the corners and 2x6 in the middle. it should Hold:mrgreen: I'm tthinking of wrapping it with maple plywood or Oak havent decided yet..

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02417.jpg

the stand is nothing great its what you put on the outside that makes it...

Poster above was talking about your guns not breaking the tank, easy subscribe.

Skimmerking 06-04-2007 09:09 PM

ok seen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DanG 06-04-2007 09:56 PM

I'd still use a thin layer of foam, IMO it's just too dangerous to not.

Skimmerking 06-05-2007 02:13 AM

Well I'm not going to use the counter top. for the tank to sit on. Im going to use stryofoam and have the ply wood to sit higher then the tank.

More pictures woll follow this weekend probably will finish the stand.

Skimmerking 06-14-2007 03:50 AM

Well I have the stand made. Its at a friends house now. all I have to do is cut the door for the left side and match it up with the stain. I hope I can match it up I might make a door for it instead of buying one from home depot..

here is the skimmer I did a leak test on it to test it out and good thing I found a ew leaks in the skimmer in the rgasket on the first flange. and then the gate vlave was leaking too. but now I have the thing water proof I hope...........

here is the skimmer with the gate valve and a extension this is what I was talking about.

I should have put a union on there I think....
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02457.jpg

Here is the dual beckett that will work with the MAK 5 and it also has a ozne port too..

Skimmerking 06-17-2007 04:08 AM

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02461.jpg

the pic doesn't do the stand justice..

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02460.jpg

the stand will be just a stand with the access from the side that is hidden with a secret door :surprise:
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02462.jpg

the stand will sit againt the wall and accessed from the back for the sump..

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02464.jpg

here is the stand from the back, its not much but as you can see its amazing what a bot of trim work can do.....
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02463.jpg

I have the corners at a 90 degree angle.... I was surprized on how good i got them to be even....

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC02465.jpg

I'm still debating if Im going to have a hood on the top of the stand... and have the top open on the top of the hood for heat to get out.....

Skimmerking 06-17-2007 08:49 PM

Well since It was Father's day today and I was given some time for myself I hooked up the skimmer. nothing like relaxing working on the tank its pretty humid here and I was sweating and didnt even say a bad word either..... any ways out with the old and in with the good...

Here sits the good old Euro reef with the fix, I had to do on it that is why i'm took it off line. Wanted to try some new again  . It will sit here in purgatory until some one wants it...
