Scratch Repair?
 

Sorry I wasnt sure where to put this question.

Has anyone heard of scratch removal on glass- I know when I used to watch late night infomercials they had stuff that would repair scratches on glass lenses (for eyes). Then I typed in glass scratch removal on google and it said there is a product however Im not too sure how well it works and whether its reef safe (it says it becomes activated with water). Other than that anyone heard of a way to fix minor scratches in glass

By the way the latter product claimed it could fix scratches on any glass including tempered.

Any thoughts

All you can do is replace the glass.I looked into it pretty good even asked a windshield place

i THINK IT/S ONLY A HUNDRED IF YOU TAKE TO A AQURIUM PLACE.

It works great...just requires a little elbow greese....Depending on the size of the tank and how it's installed it might not be fesable to replace a pain of glass!!

well replacing probably wont be worth it since all three viewing panes have small surface scratches (kind of visible with no water in the tank, dont know if its visible when there is water in the tank). That cerium oxide sounds like good idea. I just want to make sure I dont make more scratches.

Basically what it does is "grind" off a very thin layer of the glass but since the "Grit" is almost microscopic it leaves a perfect finish

do you by any chance know if this compound is available locally?

Hey Marcingo, I just picked some up at the Rock Hound shop in Victoria ,so you should be able to get it at place that sells tumbling supplies .
They will sell small 2ounce packs for $ 1.55 or pretty nearly any amount you want.
I am going to try it for removing hardwater marks from a tank ,nothingelse seems to move it . Sounds like a good tip.

Marcingo, You know the stores that specialize in all different types of semi-precious stones that can be polished to a fine gloss ? They also sell little machines that you can put unpolished stones in with an abrasive powder that rotates and tumbles the stones together making them smooth. It is called lapidary .
Maybe try these places.

Also be sure not to overheat the glass to much in one spot. I work for a window and door company, I had glass "thermal crack" once. Then you have a bigger perdictment (sp)

Just my 2 cents

One other caution, with similar products if you spend too much time buffing in one area you can get a wierd concave spot in the glass that looks like your staring through sombody elses glasses, probably not a big deal but something to be aware of.

about the heating, do I have to heat the glass? I was under the impression that I could just get a dremmel, fleece pad and the CO and just buff it cold.

I will definitely do my best to not stay in one spot, hopefully it doesnt take too long to buff out because these scratches arent very deep at all but they still bother me.
