nice pictures! how long have you had the goniopora??

vertex 04-03-2007 03:44 AM

Well. I have 3 of them actually. One huge one that is easily 1foot round when fully open that I got from MikeP. It is still doing very well and I rarely target feed it. Its does get cylcopeeze in the water regularly though. Had it probably 4-5 months now.

The other blue tip has been growing well over about 4 months also. Had to move it around the tank a lot to find a position it would open at, and it is doing great now high in the tank.

The white one I had has slowly dwindled away, still alive but 1/4 of when I got it and it just barely extends now. It won't last more than another month or two. This one never had long feeder tentacles though so I think if you find a nice long tentacle one, they can easily do well with lots of light, minimal flow and regular food.

they accept cyclopeeze? do you notice a feeding response? i was under the impression that they were nutrient hungry, maybe accepting phyto at the most. that's awesome if you notice growth. you should try and determine the species you've had success with and document your husbandry techniques. it would be beneficial to the hobby since there's not a lot of long-term success with these.

how long have you had the white species?

Thanks for the replies...

As for the goniopora. The white species is about a month older than the others. Probably almost 6 months now. It basically started to slowly die off ever since I got it, and its not got much left. Tried everything with it, oh well.

I definitely get a feeding response with Cyclopeeze for the large polyped goni, I typically turn off all my pumps, and soak some cyclopeeze mixed with crushed NLS pellets and then just drip some food into the polyps from an eyedropper. They close up on the food, and quickly retract that single tentacle. Its looks very cool since the tentacles are about 3 inches long and fully retract to nothing. Same with just adding cyclopeeze in the water, just they close up before actually grabbing much.

As for the camera, started out with a Canon digital elph SD400 and now upgraded to the digital elph SD700 IS. As for settings, I use a tripod, ISO 100-200 for most coral pics and ISO 400 for fish. The new SD700IS has an awesome digital macro that takes perfect close up shots. I also use custom white balance settings for every shot to ensure I get the best colors. Auto just doesn't cut it for me.

As for the glass, I hate coraline encrusted BGKs so yes, I do scrap that clean with a razor to keep the nice blue look. Definitely worth doing IMO.

That left side should be 100% GSP in a few months. I just started it one month ago. Grows like crazy on the glass actually... I just superglued them in place and they started spreading.

Thanks for the comments... Glad you like the pics.
