rossb 12-14-2002 04:42 AM

I don't mean to be an alarmist but it seems that almost every night there is a chat thread in the lounge...and then nobody is chatting. Naturally I'm thinking ... people want to chat but something is stopping them.

So I have analyzed the chat threads...it's alien abductions isn't it?

EmilyB 12-14-2002 04:46 AM

We are out there... :?

rossb 12-14-2002 04:54 AM

ever since october 25, 2002 I have had this irresistable urge to phone home. Do you think there is a connections?

EmilyB 12-14-2002 05:09 AM

rossb 12-14-2002 05:22 AM

EmilyB 12-14-2002 05:29 AM

go to #reefs on IRC when Steve falls asleep on here....

rossb 12-14-2002 05:31 AM

so if alien abduction was to occur in your house ...what part of calgary would that be?

rossb 12-14-2002 05:37 AM

so #reefs on irc...you got the alien lingo down pat

rossb 12-14-2002 05:44 AM

well that's pretty much what aliens are looking for .... house's on hills...you know closer to the sky. You had problems with this sort of thing/

StirCrazy 12-14-2002 06:19 AM

whare did everyone go?

StirCrazy 01-18-2003 07:03 AM

hmmm anyone?

BC_Grl 01-18-2003 07:41 AM

What's the weather like out in Calgary? I can't convince my husband to move out that way... :(

AJ_77 01-20-2003 06:10 PM

Ummm... now I'm baffled - you WANT to move HERE?!? The weather is dry and cold most of the year. This winter has been great, however, more like what you get there. Therefore, we want to move to Victoria, where half the year isn't wasted on the in-between seasons, when its neither cold enough or warm enough to do anything.

I'm with your husband, sorry... You have it really good and should never leave.

UnderWorldAquatics 01-20-2003 07:43 PM

Like Allan said, why!!!!!????? I go to calgary once in awhile to visit friends but comon! You can actually see for yourself that the earth indeed is round!!! Thats sad in my book. No mountains unless your halucinating, no good lakes close by, and beer isnt even that cheap anymore.

Doug 01-20-2003 10:52 PM

Whatsamatter with Calgary weather. Should live out here or in the north, where I lived before.

Although we had a good life and made a good living in the north, I still regret leaving Calgary in 1972. For all of you watching cable, I was in on the ground floor with Calgary cable, when it started up. I use to work for Palco Electronics and we usually did school intercoms system, etc but took over most of the cable installs for awile. :D

BC_Grl 01-21-2003 02:00 AM

Well, when I am rich and retire, I was thinking of Kelowna.
But I don't mind snow.
C'mon AJ, it can't be bad... I have a friend who lives in Calgary and he loves it!! I've been there once and enjoyed it myself. Work is said to be aplenty.
But for beauty, Abbotsford was nice. You had mountains surrounding your every move. Mt Baker was spectacular!

Delphinus 01-21-2003 03:22 AM

Calgary is flat ??? :? :?: I guess it's no Hong Kong, but it's no Delta B.C. or Houston TX either. When I had to visit Houston in the fall for a couple of weeks ... it felt like I was in a fish-eye lens, you know how the edges kind of curl up, and the center is at the deepest part of the depression of a bowl? That's what it was like down there. Block after block after block and you never go up or down more than 1" (unless you go in a building, or a freeway overpass). It was totally unnerving to never be able to see your surroundings.

I guess the NE of Calgary is pretty flat. I'm on the SW edge of the city, I drive no more than 30 minutes and I'm into the rockies. I guess we're not right in it, but at least we're closer than some. Edmonton is .. um .. what is it, a 2.5 hour drive from the mountains? Or maybe not that far, but regardless the mountains are a farther drive than they are from Calgary.

That said, this is all not to say I wouldn't move to the Island in a heartbeat. I do miss a large body of water nearby; and despite that I've known nothing else my entire life, I still cannot get used to those danged Chinooks (that's spelled M-I-G-R-A-I-N-E ... )

It is a prairie town I guess .... yeah it's nicer in BC, that's why we all go there for vacations! ;) But it could be worse. Oh well, whatcha gonna do...

Hmmm, well it is a very nice place if you're from east or north of here. The mountains are in close proximity, they look very nice indeed, and you can get there like Tony says in short time. There is awesome hiking and camping and natural communing galore, lots of fresh tumbling streams etc... I've loved being here and enjoying all this, but...

Tonight and tomorrow night its going down to -28 C and the high for the next couple should get up to -22. Sure it's not Edmonton but it's too close. I've lived here for most of my life - I'm just ready for a change. When we come to the island for a holiday, it rips my heart out to leave. I actually had bitter tears last time. (Insert whiny violin music here...)

You have water all around, a rocky island with all my favourite foliage, rain that STARTS in the fall and greens up all winter long, maybe 2 days with snow a YEAR, temps that for the most part don't see the south side of zero, and humidity. Here, my sons are developing asthma. What the h@ll is THAT?!? I never had asthma... no wait, now I do have "irritated upper airways" or some damn thing, from the high and dry. One of my pals is keen on pointing out to anyone who listens that we have lower relative humidity than the Sahara. Fifteen percent just sounds wrong, and it is.

I guess the grass is always greener, you don't know what you've got til it's gone, etc etc etc. "You should never judge someone until you've walked a mile in their shoes. Then, you're a mile away and you've got their shoes."

Cheers!

BC_Grl 01-21-2003 04:35 AM

Uhm Alan,
Rain that starts in the Fall?? Are you CRAZY???!! It rains here all throughout the seasons. Except it doesn't rain that much in the Summer and then we have water restrictions which means brown grass- not green. :(

True, the foliage is nice out here and the ocean... but I surely miss the SNOW! I wish we had true seasons here (like I hear Ontario does). Christmas is not Christmas without snow.

And we have so much tall buildings out our way, we miss out on many nice skies like Sask has.

But you know what? You're right: be happy where you are at.

EmilyB 01-21-2003 04:37 AM

Yeah, then of course there is that "I felt bad I had no shoes, and then I saw a man with no legs" thing.... :(

Anyway, my brother and his wife retired on the island after taking an extended month long holiday out there, and finding some wonderful results with not only asthma, but arthritis, etc. They could afford it.

I am just plumping up the humidity in the house.....  We were just talking about retiring in Warner........

Canadian Man 01-21-2003 04:40 AM

I love Calgary and I never want to leave again.
I lived in the Bahamas in 98/99 and it was nice but it was sure nicer to come home!
If I have my way, I will be in Calgary till I am no longer
It's nice to have some seasons. Instead of 20 deg c being winter in the bahamas and 30 to 40 deg being summer.

BC_Grl 01-21-2003 04:41 AM

Em, did I ever tell you you have a beautiful brain? I mean, in your tank. Such nice colours!

EmilyB 01-21-2003 04:44 AM

Thanks Jeanna... 8)

BC_Grl 01-21-2003 04:45 AM

Well one thing I learned about living in Prince George. When it is cold, it is a dry cold. You put on your jacket, long johns (I bought my long johns at a Superstore in Calgary years ago) etc, and you're warm. Here, when it's cold, it is damp and no jacket or long johns will keep you warm. It goes right to the bone.

Jonathan, you've lived in the Bahamas and prefer here??? wow.

Canadian Man 01-21-2003 04:54 AM

Well it could have been the Jerk! that I was working for!
That was the only miserable part.
It was nice otherwise but I do know that people(I don't think anyone)
truly appreciates their place in this world till it changes.
I would like to go back but I do like it here as well.

It's quite a shock walking in a mall and being the only white person in the place  .

The canreef chat sucks. You can't get to the input line easily, although we have mentioned it several times, and all the good swear words are........well, censored.

BC_Grl 03-22-2003 04:18 PM

What is the link to the IRC chat again, please? I lost it when I had to format my drive.
