Got Nog ?
This one should make some good stuff. :)
A pretty labour intensive and unconventional build....but i think im pretty happy with it. Its a dual Dart MW. right now it gets fed about 1200 gph of raw overflow water and 100 LPH of air through the meshwheels. I still have to get some hiccups out and hook up an additional 100 LPH pump...soon. Of course the install went sideways on me, but finally completed, so ill get some pics of the construction and the bad boy in action soon. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SKimmer025.jpg Marc. |
Good Gawd Man!
|
Wow.....Unbelievable!
Can't wait to see this bad boy in action!! |
thats is frickin awesome marc. good job man. that is some SERIOUS skimming action. makes my skimmer look like your collection cup
|
Heh,
yeah its kickin as we speak...non stop, and still not yet running at full tilt. It`s a pretty massive skimmer at 105 gallons....but i want a good load of fish one day. :D Marc. |
|
Hey Marc,
Yeah, we can tell from the picture that it holds 100g water! What a monter! Are you going to DIY a self cleaning head? |
Funny you mention that Fastfish, i was looking at a good 1 rpm motor in my little shop to do that next.
But it consumed so much of my time latley i just want to Not build anything for a week or so...lol |
I swear it looks like a Dalek man. All you need is two columns of lights and a little robotic arm thingy to complete the look and away you go!
What is the main body constructed of? How did you make the collection cup, can you get short lengths of 24" diameter acrylic tubing or whatever that is? Man how much would that suck to find out you had to buy 10' of it at a time when all you want is 8" for the cup. Or are you planning on building 10 more of these? :p |
lol, im unsure who dalek is but im guessin theres a resemblance ..lol.
The cup was actually routed out and 1/16th lexan was flexed and placed in this slot. there is a glue seam in the back of the cup. I cant afford the 24"acrylic..lol. |
Daleks ... nasty little things.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...x-Daleknew.jpg From Dr. Who.. :p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dalek |
hahaha I can't believe some you just made a dr. who reference. Thats frickin awesome.
 wow that is one mother of skimmer! That thing holds more H2O than my entire tank. sheesh. |
I was thinking along the lines of a cousin of R2D2, a few years ago a scrap dealer had what was advertised as a cottage size nuclear reactor, it was a movie prop but at 6 feet tall and 4 foot diameter, did I mention it was clear acrylic, I thought that IT would make a cool aquarium... or skimmer.
Doug |
Yeah, seriously. Wow. 105 gallons, did you say?!
*starts chant* We want pics...we want pics.... |
Holy Fudge!!!!
|
Sweet Jeebus! That thing is a monster! Heh and like someone said before, it holds more water than my whole tank.
|
That's Fan-Tas-Tic Marc. Very nice build.
Another reason to drop by again when Im out your way.. |
Ok dude, question time .. :) I promise no more Doctor Who jokes. (Ok I lied. Just one. Instead of rolling around shreiking "EX-TER-MI-NATE!!!" this one is saying "EX-TRA-SKIM-MATE!!!!") Oh I am such a nerd...
1. What's the main body construction? I swear it looks almost like a hot water heater coated in fibreglass. Except I know it can't be because they're like only 40 gallons... 2. I don't see where the venturi's are? Oh and I guess you have to inject the air with an air pump (I remember you were looking for a rather large air pump a week or two ago, I remember this because it piqued my interest then as to what you were up to... :) ). But you still have a venturi right? Truly a work of art.... |
Marc, you are hard-core. I can't think of any other way of saying it. Hard core....
"EX-TRA-SKIM-MATE" HAHAHAHAHA~!~!! That made my day! |
Can you make another one?...maybe a single dart version that might be slightly smaller?
B |
WOW! How big is your tank
|
you should put a small cute-n-furry animal in there and see how long it takes to skim it! :twised: lmao
|
Hey all,
I guess i should say its 100 LPM not LPH of air...it will accept 200 LPM without cavitating the pumps forsure. Tony, Its epoxy resins and fiberglass, built using a mould. (pics as soon as i can on the build) There is no venturi`s, though experimenting was done using venturi`s of different sizes during the wet testing. It is just an 1/2" air input line at the intake of the pump, it cavitated or burped too much when one is used with significant air input. Beverly, the total system capacity is over 1000 gal. probably a net volume running at 800 g now. Kwirky, i know id stuff the neighbors kid in there, he needs a good skimmin...the little brat. Heres some testing and tweaking.... One of the impellar mods, this one in particular created too much drag and pumps thermally shut down, as well as one using more Gutter guard. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SKimmer015.jpg Filling, seemed to start makiing skimmate at about half way to the top..lol. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SKimmer019.jpg Top down at half full, looking through an 8" neck http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SKimmer021.jpg i was like an expecting father at this point. (its ok, im a nerd too tony ;) ) http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SKimmer009.jpg Bubbles size in the neck . http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SKimmer053.jpg http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j2...SKimmer051.jpg More pics as soon as i can. Marc. |
Who da man?!?!! You da man!!!
|
hehe, I gotta move out to the burbs so I can afford a bigger house and build my dream big tank... :)
That's a killer skimmer. |
That is so sweet. Marc how many hours have you worked on that puppy.
J |
Now thats what I called a skimmer....What did you make it out of?
|
Jason,
I wouldnt want to even guess....lets put it this way, if i tried to pay myself, it would be considered slave labour. I updated my tank thread, and included some more explanations and pics on the skimmer here on page 10. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...&pagenumber=10 I wanted to copy it over here, but was unsure if that was a waste of board resources. Marc. |
I think it would be nice to have some of that over here on a board from your OWN country, and not a waste of resources at all. :p
|
Ok you got it tony.
Ill copy it after work tonight..or I think i should try to make a tank thread, i dont have one that i can update with this stuff here. If it makes you feel better, our country saw it first ;). Marc. |
|
I was reading that RC thread last night and I must say Marc, the build on that skimmer is AMAZING!! I didn't really think of the logistics and what was involved to build it. Your ingenuity astounds me
BTW, we're just jealous that you post over there and not here first  |
But i did post it here first !
I didnt even make a thread for it...i just updated my own tank thread. |
So, you built a super-duper skimmer, and hooked it up to your truck. How many miles per gallon of skimmate?
|

|
Heh, I know Christy.
Some times i post there too, because people here tend to think that i hook this up to my truck...or even think its a robot :P LMAO....J/K. |
Quote:
sometimes you're just a little too advanced for us I guess , hell I didn't even really know what it was until I had a good look (and you gotta admit, it really does look robot-like ) |

Seriously, that's an awesome DIY, and I'm not just talking about the skimmer. Do you do tank tours for drive-by Canreefers? I could spend a day just drooling over stuff in your equipment room (I know you like to keep it clean, so I'd totally wear a bib, if that's what you required). |
Wee...Weeeeeeeee
Wee...Wee all the way home.
Marc turn the truck around, you'll never get it on the trailer that way. Dah! I'd like to send that pic. to Lindsay it will blow his mind. Trying to get Pic.on my computer so I can forward? Laterrrrrrrr: RJ |
Holy c**p! I just went through your tank thread on RC... Man, I wish I had known about you a year ago when I was planning...I would have done a few things differently.
I simply MUST visit sometime... B |
