Laguna pond pumps?

Anyone ever use a Hagen Laguna pond pump in their reefs? I have a friend using one for returns & one for current. They say salt safe. Churning up some kind of current at a decent wattage.

I guess there ok if you like the sound of a Boeing 747 in your livingroom.
they work well but are way too noisy, I would never use one.
Just my 2cents...

Hi,

They are okay and they are quite a bit quieter than a Mag, but they are not silent. And, yes they are salt water compatible -- except for the screws that hold down the impeller cover (just like the Mag).

They are a close relative to the Sen pump family and the Dolphin DP family.

Is this to say they are like a Little Giant?

And what about what Victor's remark - "quite a bit quieter than a Mag"? How are we to reconcile such divergent views?

Aj :?

We did use a Laguna Pond Pump back a while ago, and upon straining our memory....it died relatively quickly in SW..

Oh, yeah, I remember now. We won it from a Big Al's draw. We won the pump, pond liner, etc.

Hi,

Actually, I have only used a small ones...the 1000 gph and they are run submerged.

It is very similar to the Aquaclear 5000 and it runs okay quiet, but not silent. It is about twice to three times as loud as a Maxijet 1200 and the Mag is three to four times louder than a Maxijet.

EmilyB, which part of it died ?

To be honest, I can't remember.

It was chucked, so I think the death was a major failure...seems to me I remember crud on the bottom of my SW curing container and subsequent panic. That is where we would have used it.

I really can't recall if we sealed it with silicone however.

Thanks for the info. I installed another Mak4 for a return pump last night, instead. Will use something else to generate more current in the tank.

I use a Laguna pump on my reef (2100 gph) at home. It's been going for over a year now with no problem. It's very quite also.

We use Laguna pumps for return pumps on all our SW systems at both stores and have never had one fail yet.

Thanks Dale. How much you think your getting at top, with a 2100gph.

We have a Mag 18 and it's quite loud.
What brand of pump would you say is much quieter, but as effective?

Dale D 11-13-2002 06:17 AM

Doug.

I am only lifting the water about 3 feet at the most, so, I am not losing much of the 2100 gph. The tank has 2 overflow boxes with 2 u tubes each. I have a ball valve (3/4 open) on the return from the pump to reduce the flow rate so the overflows can keep up.

WTF u dug up a 9 year old thread to tell us whats probably in their instruction leaflet?!?!?!

Kmarrs 04-21-2011 05:47 PM

I am using a max-Flo 2000 for my return in the 65 it works great not to loud and they come with a 3 year warranty and like all mag drives all parts are replaceable there my favorite pond pumps so i figured why not use one of them good quality they have proven themselves to me. and the price is fair to!
