Where to buy plastic-coated magnets
I am looking for plastic-coated magnets either online or in a store in Vancouver.
I want replace the suction cups that hold filter outlets, thermometer probes etc. in place with magnets. This is for my FW tanks, I am tired of suction cups not working. Does anyone know where I can find these? |

You could always coat a regular magnet in sealer.

probably going to have to custom build one. Wont be hard - 5minute epoxy and some lee valley rare earth magnets, maybe a shot coat of krylon to make em pretty after.

i'm pretty sure princess auto has those wicked strong rare earth magnets in all shapes and sizes...last time i was there they did anyways:)

You can also just pick-up a small sheet of 1/8th" or slightly larger acryclic, and make a small 'box' for the magnets out of those. Then you could also attach whatever mounts you wanted to the magnets. And, you could make larger ones that have more magnets, etc... But theres also sealing them like everyone else suggested! Just a thought?

If I was to coat bare magnets I figure I would pour a layer of Weldon-40 into a plastic container/mould (doesn't bond to some plastics), then after it sets place the magnet on top and pour the second half of 40. Should make a cool smooth clear puck that is well sealed. Estimated build time is less then 1 beer.

Never thought of Weld-on, I've been planning a project to make tank mounted Frag Plugs using magnets, and I wasn't sure which adhesive to use. I'm thinking that'll do the trick, Thanks!

buy the good rare earth magnets from Lee Valey, the use an acrylic epoxy potting mix from industreal plastics and paints.

OK I like the encasing in epoxy/putty idea, it will also make it simpler because I can add the filter clip holder (the U-shaped part that attaches the filter pipe to the suction cup) into the epoxy at the same time.

Was thinking this through a little more, you'll have to do this in 2 stages, lay a bed of epoxy on some wax paper, give it a little scuff once dry to ensure adhesion. Lay the magnet on, cover it over with epoxy.
If you bypass the scuffing part - those tiny dixie cups they hand pills out in (about 1/2" diameter) would be a perfect mold for this project. Andy |
