cats paw stylophora?
Looking for a proper ID on this coral. Am I correct to assume it's a "cats paw" stylo? I thought I'd have some fun with a camera zoom-in sequence. When I got zoomed in on this thing it reminded me of that old "flying through space" screen saver. Makes my eyes go all:crazyeye:
sort of close http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...ts_paw_1_1.jpg closer yet http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat..._paw_macro.jpg even closer http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...polyps_1_1.jpg |
I'm pretty sure that coral is called a "Ruth needs a frag of that" coral. It is very rare - but I notice that you have a few others in your tank with the same name:mrgreen:

ruth i think you are close but scientific name is colinneeds afrag ofthat. you were close though.

i have no clue what its called....but would love a frag of it......are you thinking of doing any frags from it? Let me know

Looks like Pocilliopora to me.
|
Wow you guys are very scientific, although it seems corals may not be an exact science yet. I had not planned on fragging Mr. Fuzzy quite yet. Thanks Albert, I wondered about that but it is a lot different than the known pocilliopora I have and thought it looked like some pictures I've seen of cats paw.
|
Most likely it's Pocillopora damicornis; It could be Stylophora pistillatta - but polyp shape seems to be slightly off - So my bets are on P. damicornis.
|
Definitely not Stylopora. Most probably Pocillopora.
I'll see if I can find a pic of my old Stylo ... Here's one I used to have: http://members.shaw.ca/reefs/delphin...0103%20009.jpg |
Very nice piece, seems like a pink base, green polyp pocillopora to me.
Probably the same as this: http://members.shaw.ca/reefblog/reef...pink_green.htm |
My vote is pocillipora as well. You will know for sure if you start finding new colonies of it forming all over your tank :surprise:
|
It was a volunteer that just grew out of some live rock so the ID sounds logical.
Thanks for the help folks. |

I've heard that Pocillopora's will do "polyp bailout" and start new colonies. Not a true spawning event but sorta similar results in that suddenly little tiny colonies form out of nowhere. The one I have hasn't done that to me though so I'm not sure if some are more predisposed to it than others.
|
Yeah I've heard it is polyp bailout as well. I have two types in my tank and only one of them has started colonies elsewhere.
That is cool that yours grew that large from one polyp. |
