Cprowler's 120
I set this tank up in December 05 and transferred everything over from my 40g long on 21/05, so I guess that is it's birthday. I acquired most of my corals from the local reefers like chwkreefer, Chin Lee, pocilipora, smokinreefer, Anthony, Jesse, Ivy & John and a few others.
This is what it looks like today. http://zld.ca/reef/fs002.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/fcu022.jpg Here are a few of the construction. http://zld.ca/reef/fs003.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/f02.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/f003.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/fs005.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/fs007.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/fs011.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/fs013.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/fs015.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/fs017.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/ts01.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/ts02.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/p001.jpg |

Hi Bill
You tank looks fantastic. Your workmanship puts us cabinet makers to shame. Tom R |
Very nice. Well thought through.
|
beautiful
Bill
i've seen your system in person and that was what gave me inspiration on the cabinet work on my new system. Its first class worksmanship and well thought out system. Very nice. PS - i was wondering when you were going to post up your Tank journal...... |
Wow Bill. It looks great, you must be proud.
|
Just beautiful - you should be very proud of yourself.
|
Very nice! Is that a 70g?
|
Very nice!!
|
Im really liking the side-cabinet built into the stand.
Its nice to have a shelf for all your food/additives/other junk and the control panel is great too. Good Stuff Bill! |
MAn that looks awesome man , love the stand I made one for my 75 gal a couple years back....
|
Thanks for the kind words everyone!
The tank is a 120g AGA, 48 x 24 x 24 and the sump is a Seastar 40g long, 48 x 12 x 16. I'll give more details with pics as we go. |
I had two main goals when building this system, not to have stray light coming out the back or top and little to no noise. I don't have any stray light but the noise is not quite where I would like it to be.
The biggest challenge with having a completely sealed unit is heat. I have the Mag 9/return and the Dart/CL in the crawl space to reduce noise and to help keep them cool. I also have experimented with a exhaust system to get the hot air out. I suck it out from above the display where the lighting is and blow it out the side of the house. It works quite well now, it comes on when the MH’s come on and off an hour after the MH’s go off. When I was trying to get the sump drilled for the return I could only find a place to drill 1" holes and I wanted at least 1 1/2", so I got two 1" holes drilled and T it into the pump. After I had it drilled a glass company called me back saying they can go up to 3", oh well at some point I will be upgrading the sump and pump. Maybe  You can see the two black bulkheads in the back middle of the sump. http://zld.ca/reef/sump0029.jpg And in the crawl space you can see the pumps and plumbing. First the Mag 9/return and then with the Dart/CL. http://zld.ca/reef/Plum.pump001.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/closedloop013.jpg I was originally using a inline ducting fan rated for around 80 cfm's and that wasn't doing it so I went to a 309 cfm fan I got from Chin Lee. Thanks Chin I haven't forgotten about that. Here you can see the flexible aluminum ducting. http://zld.ca/reef/fs027.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/vent009.jpg This is the old fan in the c/s inline with the ducting and then removed from the ducting. http://zld.ca/reef/venting001.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/nf03.jpg New fan http://zld.ca/reef/nf02.jpg I first set it up like the old one but vibrations were going through the floor. http://zld.ca/reef/nf01.jpg How it is now. http://zld.ca/reef/nf09.jpg I have it vented through the side of the house using a dryer vent. http://zld.ca/reef/vent011.jpg |

Cheers, |
Love the finished look.
How sealed (air tight) is the stand? Maybe you want to try adding a transfer grill for the exhaust fan to draw more fresh air in. That may help your heat issues. |
I thought you've had that ritteri longer than 1 year? Did you have it in your 40g before? Or am I mistaken?
|
Sorry for the way late reply. I’m not getting notification on replies.
Tony – yes your right, I have had it for just over 2 years. Lando – I don’t have any heat issues at the moment, I have considered that. |
For a CL I am running a Dart, I don’t have it on any timers or pattern changers. It’s just a steady flow from right to left 24/7. It seems to work, I think I’m getting good growth, color and PE. I do however adjust the nozzles every few months.
Here are all the pieces all laid out. http://zld.ca/reef/closedloop001.jpg The intake. http://zld.ca/reef/closedloop007.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/closedloop009.jpg Manafold http://zld.ca/reef/closedloop005.jpg The intake just goes over the top of the tank and the manifold is just above also. This way I did not have to drill any holes in the tank. Intake http://zld.ca/reef/ef3.jpg Manifold http://zld.ca/reef/12vfans.jpg http://zld.ca/reef/closedloop015.jpg I just used some locline fittings that screwed into the PVC fittings on the manifold. http://zld.ca/reef/ss013.jpg |
Wow fantastic photos Bill! Your side equipment storage cabinet puts me to shame  Its so organized and well thought out. Makes me want to redo my setup.
|
Hey Bill, that last pic of the side tank shot with the multiple locline returns looks sweet. Gives me ideas for my next tank..
|
|
Nice! Your tank is doing very well.
|
That last shot is stunning . Great tank ,great photo !!
.................Dave. |
Phenomenal thread! I love how the stand came out.
Can you do a close up shot of the control pannel? |
Thanks everyone!
Catherine - I have a few things off line right now and I'm changing a few things, I'll get a pic up before too long. |
Time for an update.
I haven't discussed lighting yet, I have MH, VHO, T5 and moonlighting. I have a 250w MH 10K XM above the coral wall side and a 400w MH 10K XM abouve the Anemone, both driven by magnetic ballasts. I also have 3 x 48" 110w and 1 x 36" 95w VHO Super Actinics run off a Ice cap 660 & 2 x 54w T5 (1-10k & 1-actinic) by Tek and 2 x 1w Blue LED by Aqualight Giving me about 1185 watts of lighting. Here is the lighting schedule from the ACjr programming. If Time > 09:30 Then VHO ON If Time > 21:30 Then VHO OFF If Time > 11:30 Then MHs ON If Time > 19:30 Then MHs OFF If Time > 10:30 Then T5s ON If Time > 20:30 Then T5s OFF If Temp > 79.9 Then EAN ON If Temp < 79.0 Then EAN OFF If Temp > 84.0 Then MHs OFF If Time > 11:25 Then EXH ON If Time > 20:00 Then EXH OFF EAN is the fans in the unit. EXH is the exhaust fan under the house that sucks out the hot air from the canopy. VHO only http://www.zld.ca/reef/cvho1.jpg T5's only http://www.zld.ca/reef/ct51.jpg VHO & T5's http://www.zld.ca/reef/cvt1.jpg MH's only http://www.zld.ca/reef/cmh1.jpg VHO & T5 & MH http://www.zld.ca/reef/cal1.jpg |
VHO only

Wow you've got a lot of lights crammed in there
Thats pretty impressive just looking at the photos of the T5's alone. The XM bulbs look pretty yellow without the supplementation. I tried some XM's earlier this year but unfortunately one was white and one was yellow. The tank is looking great, I see a lot of new corals in there (and not many of the old). Did I miss something or did you redo the tank? |
Yeah, those pics were from last year. I still have most of the corals now they are just bigger and some are in different places. This is the most recent pic I have from last month, I'm going to get some more pics today hopefully.

hehe that makes more sense, I was thinking "gee why did he get rid of all that nice stuff and put little frags in?"
|
I see the anemone is slightly larger now too. :p
Awesome looking tank BTW. |
1 1/2 years old
The tank will be 18 months old in a few days and I will be out of town so here are some pis now.
