phosban reactor - progess pics?
would anybody be interested in watching the results of a phosban reactor and hair algae. ive read lots of how it helps control/eliminate hair algae, and i'm thinking of taking photos - before and weekly updates
any interest?? |
good one
i think it would be a goood idea! giver!
|
i would love it. i've been really debating whether to purchase a reactor for the benefits but would love to see in action first. awesome idea
|
I would like that.
|
Good idea. Also maybe the type of reactor and the media used.
|
well i didnt keep up with the weekly updates but i think i finally got the hair algae beat !!
i setup the reactor with phosban media at first, then in June i switched to rowaphos. here's a shot of some of the algae i was dealing with, i really need to clean the glass before pics http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...1/100_0138.jpg as a fish only setup, i couldnt get any snails or crabs to help eat it up. i'll post a picture today, once the wife brings the camera back from the beach. i think i prefer the rowaphos, as the algae seems to be in check now that its gone :) |
I'm so glad a phosphate sponge worked for you. I've been running Phos-Loc, Rowaphos, and phosban for the last while, all with no effect on my GHA.
What did it look like before? |
that pic was before, i'll post a pic from today later,
one thing i think that helped was changing of the lights. i think the old bulbs helped its grow. i also removed the sandbed. i manually removed (scrubbed with a toothbrush the rocks in a pale of sw) a lot of the algae. the tangs seems to be picking at the leftovers and keeping it in check. have you scrubbed your rocks? that seemed to be the key once i got the phosphate in check. hopefully it stays away!! |
I've done all the things you have done, except remove my sand bed as it is new. I've even done a bunch you haven't, all with no luck.
I'm interested to watch how things progress for you. |
Interesting read on phosphate and GFO

here's a shot from this morning. there is a few little patches of hair algae, but the tangs are working on it.
i think the key is removing the phosphates then physically removing the algae off the rocks. in my tank, the aglae is not growing back due to the lack of phosphate http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...1/100_0843.jpg |
Anyone know where you can buy a Hanna Low Res Phosphate Colorimeter in Canada? I have been disappointed with all the other phosphate test kits. I recently even bought the MERC Phosphate Test Kit ($80) and still find it is still hard to read.
