Wow. Someone from Calgary has the opportunity of a lifetime.
|
pm sent
|
I can almost hear the collective spines of Calgary compressing in unison :P
|
I called and left a message. :)
|
That tank must weight close to 2 tonns if it's all glass, It must have been built on site.
Wow if you wanted that to be a reef setup you would need probably 10 1000 watt mh lights for it!! |
Thats a 1200 gallon tank!!!!!!!!!
|
I would assume its in te basment and unless its a walk out basment I cant imagine how you would get it out.
|
1200 gallons, baby! Is that the king of Calgary SW tanks? Anyone know this tank's history or former glory?
This thing is going to weigh close to 2000 pounds just for the tank! Awesome RC thread regarding the install of a 10' 1200g beast here. Good luck to whomever tackles it! |

Wow!! I just looked through the RC thread on the 1200g tank install
Whoever takes the Calgary tank has got some serious planning ahead of them. I'd like to tag along on the thread of the person who takes the tank and what they have to do to set it up. Gonna be big bucks for sure :drinking: |
And I thought I had a big move coming up.
|
It is probably worth calling "dibs" on it just for the salvage value of the glass and related paraphenelia (pumps, etc). Someone in Calgary could make a pretty penny on this "freebie" if they act quickly. Establishing a tank of that size (or even committing the resources to move it) is not something I'd expect as an impulse decision. A lot of planning.
An aside: when moving a large piece of equipment into a work building a while ago, the engineering solution was to dig a pit, cut a hole (a new, large door, effectively) in the foundation, install the equipment and then re-construct around it. It wasn't as expensive as you'd think. And, comparing to the cost of establishing and running a tank of that size, probably not impossible to consider. |
If you didn't salvage the glass, a 4 foot depth tank. Go swim with the fishes.
|
Wow ... and I have been looking for glass for my 660G ... hope it's still available
|
Did anyone hear back from this guy yet?
|
If this is glass I'm sure it's fairly thick. Bet it would be exciting to move a 10'x4' sheet of glass.
|
Even disassembled, this is a major lift. A side panel or bottom is going to weigh nearly 500lbs (assuming 3/4" glass).
I'm still curious to know if anyone has knowledge of, or (even better) pictures of, this tank when it was set up. This thing was/is a monster. |
Something is a little weird here.
Gnu-reefer made the thread yesterday and was here at a around 6:30 am this morning and again at 9:50 am. Also, voicemail message(within 20 minutes of his posting.) left for Gnu-reefer at contact number in original post and no reply either way. hmmmmmm............ Very interesting indeed. :) |
Wow, this tank is more than twice as big as my tank - and I remember moving mine when we were building our house --- it took 14 guys to move it - no easy task. We had to move the tank during the framing stages and even though we have a walkout, we still had to get it through the window and in to the fish room, which was framed after the fact. I don't think there's an easy way to move that tank out of the basement.
Regards, Rico |
Gary,
Could be that gnu-reefer's post is a hoax  Anyway, what are you gonna do with this tank if you get it? BTW, my question is real, no hoax  I'm very interested in what the folks who have asked to take this tank are planning to do with it. |

Not many people will have the resources to have this moved ASAP like he stated in his post. I did leave him a message to get back to me and I'd have it done yesterday or today and heard nothing back so I never lined everything up. (Now wouldn't be even possible to make anything happen asap.) I was thinking of possibly tearing it apart and rebuilding it in one side of my garage. I wouldn't even think of putting anything that big in my house. But like I said........ I'm calling it. http://users.adelphia.net/~mjparx/im...eye_see-bs.jpg I.C.B.S Unless someone can tell me otherwise. :) |
WOW. If someone does setup up this tank I would love to see the finished result. I think I'm lucky this offer is in Calgary, otherwise I might be tempted to sell my car or something and set that beast up.
|
I saw this post late so sent him a pm ... my idea was to use the glass to build my 660G and the leftover for the sump ... would definately have to disassemble and then get cut to size 96X48X32
|
Gary,
I tried for it as well, no sign of a response |
I had called first thing
the guy that answered the phone didn't know a thing about it I pm'd Gnu Reefer to see what was going on and I haven't heard from him either kinda weird Why post something and then not follow thru at least let us know what the heck is going on. Not cool to keep us in the dark like this Neal |
There is also the posibility that they wanted it gone and simply smashed it.
I shuter at that thought, because if I bought a house with a 1200g tank in the basment I would definatly want to keep it and set it all back up. |
What a tard.
If you look at this users other posts he is the same person that tried to pass off a photochop fish as one in his tank untill Willow pointed it out. He's also made another thread and never replied in his own thread again.
Go figure. |
after seeing his other posts, i feel like such a tool.
Wonder who the poor bugger is everybody keeps calling... |

I'll be sure to give him all the input I can on his future threads. :) |
Any reason not to ban him?
|
i agree to that
|
Just called there and the guy said its gone allready

ill bet it wasnt, the guy just wanted to stop people from calling.
|
What Im thinking,is a few guys sitting around a table drinking beers. One goes to take a leak, and the others devise a practical joke.2 days and 100 calls later, they let him in on it,so now he just says its sold.

Large Aquarium....I may be the culprit!
I was searching Canreef for some miscellaneous items and came across this thread from 2 years ago. Strangely, it sounds like the tank I built for my wife and I when we lived in the NW part of Calgary before we sold the house. I built the basement around it. I don't imagine the fellow was too impressed with removing it, because it could withstand an earthquake. It was a bit of a science project, and when I sold the house, it wasn't quite complete. If the guy wasn't a 'mad scientist' like myself, he probably would've been frustrated and destroyed it instead of figuring out my 'franken-tank'. I have never posted photos before, but if anyone is interested, I have the construction documented and I could share them?
