My Reef Tanks (pic heavy)
This is my 30 gallon sumpless system. I've added a sponge and green bubble coral since this pic, I'll try to update soon. Just got a skimmer upgrade with the help of Johnny Reefer. Thanks man!

Suffering with a bit of hair algae at the moment! This tank has needs a bit more work and time, but will eventually contain about 50 ricordea. I'm also planning to add one or two additional tanks and a larger sump to this system for soft coral propagation. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/30cube-1.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/reef147.jpg And my latest addition, a 2L pico! This tank has been a lot of fun and suprisingly easy. Inhabitants include 2 sexy shrimp and a pom-pom crab. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53...xercrab014.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/pico045.jpg |
Beautiful tanks. I really like your red open brain. It's very bright red.
I'm also getting a few sexy shrimp for my wife's nano tank.:) |
Looks good, Spence.
I'm interested in getting some of those rics you were mentioning, when they're ready. Cheers:smile:, |
Your tanks look great! I love the colors in 30 gallon tank. Can't wait to see your ricordea collection. I'll be right behind Mark for those rics
|
That first tank is awsome. How long have you had those little red starfish for? Mine always disapear into the rocks or melt in the first day. Last tank the 5g you should buy another pompom crab I heard you can have a slight chance of haveing them produce in captivity. I have about 10 pom pom crabs and they got babbies in them on a weekly basis. I need to move mine into a smaller tank if I want to have chance of haveing the eggs survive.

stinky, i've had the starfish for about 3 weeks now. it's important to acclimate starfish slowly.
here's a pic with the new corals. i also recently added 2 more damsels, for a total of 3. my strawberry dottyback, tomato clown, and original damsel demonstated some of the most aggressive and relentless behavior i've ever seen in my tanks. one damsel looks near death, while the other is now being ignored. i'm a little concerned for my sun coral. i had it placed in the sand, and i didn't realize that some of the polyps were burried. those polyps have died, and i'm really hoping it won't destroy the whole colony! http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/xenia-1.jpg here's my linkia star chillaxing. :) http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/xenia001-1.jpg |
love the tank, i really like the softy lps theme, that is what i did also. beeaaauuutiful.
cheers |

Very clean. Very nice..
|
nice tanks. looks like you got something similar to Anthony ( seahorse fanatic ) he has a field of brains, and it looks like your working on a field of bubbles:D
|
Luv that brain, makes me wish I still had mine
|
|
cool pix, luv that brain, sun coral too!!!
do you target feed the sun coral? how often! |
I have been feeding the sun coral every night. I'll back off to once every other night once it's healthy again. Or should I say 'if it's healthy again'. I just fragged it. http://www.canreef.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=27286
|
a new hammer.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/30tall083.jpg and a FTS. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/30tall089.jpg the sun coral is doing great! no tissue recession after the fragging. i blow off the blue sponge every night, but it's still a sediment trap. and if you can believe it, there is noticable growth after less that two weeks! a few months down the road i'll try to upgrade my circulation. there's some exciting products coming out for water movement and i'm not about to waste my money now. i'm happy with my stocking for now. i'll fill in the rest of the space with ricrodea, shrooms, and maybe some zoos...eventually. lemonpeel angel is still on the way. my efforts and funds will now be concentrated on my 30 cube system. i'm going to give it a few more weeks to stabalize, double my current lighting, increase circulation and purchase a few dozen ricordea for propagation. while those are growing, i'm going to add at least one 4 foot tank to the system. this will be designed to maximize surface area while appearing as a display tank. no eggcrate for me, thanks. |
if the sun coral starts receding are you supposed to trim it ?
|
the sun coral's tissue was receeding rapidly and showed no signs of slowing. it started with a few polyps burried in sand, which quickly died off. damaged coral tissue tends to errode unless removed.
|
Looks awesome, Spence. Love that new hammer. I get the feeling I'm missing out on a wicked Safari shipment! Patience is a virtue!
These exciting products in water movement you speak of.....any idea of "affordability"? What's the cause of the excitement? Cheers:smile:, |

Vortex is what you're probably thinking of. :p

http://www.ecotechmarine.com/ i saw a video of two of these on a controller. you could almost tip your tank over if you're not careful! |
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gnx/30tall016.jpg
i noticed my new bubble coral was starting to brown, so i added a 28w T5 strip to my existing 130w PC. this gives a much more pleasing colour temp. :D but i had to reduce the exposure time to improve clarity...reducing brightness. it is definitely time for a new camera. my aiptasia problem has receeded. i can see less than a dozen heads and i have some juice for them. ;) my blue sponge grows a lot faster than i expected. when i get more tanks set up for propagation, it is definitely on the list to prop. hair algae is dying off. it was introduced with new LR, as i expected it. twice a week water changes and a more efficient skimmer has delt with it nicely. some unwanted macro is colonizing the left portion of my tank. it's not unpleasant, but i'll try to further reduce nutrients to kill it off. eventually, i'll be adding an overflow, 10g sump, and 10g display refugium with seahorses. better, random circulation will be added. a few more ricordea and this system is done. |
The colours are just amazing on that picture. Not saying don't get a new camera (far be it for me to get in the way of getting a new toy!!), but really, the colours are just amazing there.

Very nice Spencer!
Is that a Lemonpeel Angelfish? What about the Clown? Red and Black? (Amphiprion melanopus?) Is it hosting in that Bubble? Cheers, |
thanks Mark! it's a lemonpeel angel, and a tomato clown. the tomato clown does host the bubble. i really like the lemonpeel...he's gorgeous. but he keeps trying to eat my finger leather!

yah those angels will nip at corals. i have a flame angel and i think it was nibling on some of my corals, but i keep it well fed and this seems to keep it from munchin. your lemon peel is beatiful and i love the colour in your tank. very nice.
cheers |
Everything looks great! Nice pics. I would love to have a little tank on my desk at work, could you share some info on your pico? What do you have for equipment? Whats the upkeep like?
Thanks |
