It's a joint project between Danny and a former Petland manager.

Yaaaay. More fish can die now.....

Ill continue my drive to the north. Who else would hold a Regal Angel for 2 weeks before you buy it.

fishmanty 08-29-2006 05:33 PM

Hey Albert, that Petland manager, do you have his name by chance?

rudy 08-29-2006 05:41 PM

Guys name is Cody.

Really good guy. If he is running the store it should do well.

Boy, they're already under the microscope and they haven't even opened yet.

I'm curious to see how they'll compete with everyone as far as livestock conditions/quiality and pricing are concerned.

fishmanty 08-29-2006 05:59 PM

He sounds formiliar. As soon as someone hears that their doors are open, they should post it, as its on the way home from work for me. Im not going put them under the microscope until I see what they have to offer for us.

EmilyB 08-29-2006 07:17 PM

Is Cody the red-haired guy that used to work at Pisces ?

rudy 08-29-2006 07:34 PM

I don't know. Maybe it is Colby. That would make sense as he worked at Westhills Petland right? You can't miss him due to the eyes. Check out his contacts. They are bizarre.

Snappy 08-29-2006 07:53 PM

I for one am willing to let the store open & speak for itself and not get hung up on preconceived notions from the rumour mill. Danny at Wai's has always treated me very well. He also donated for our frag meet in Jan as did Gold's and Ocean Aquatics in BC.

I do agree with what you are saying. I just have issues with the way the current store is run, so I am a bit worried that we will be getting more of the same down south.

If this other guy is running the store then of course we will give him a shot.

It's just not as exciting as hearing that it's another Gold's or Aquarium Illusions (Stores with a great track record) is opening in the South.

Ya know, its funny how people used to condemn BA's all the time. Then they closed down and all of the sudden we miss them. Then we move our misguided LFS frustration, too quick to point the finger and submit to buyer beware warnings on to the next poor vendor in line.

Lets just see what they will offer us. I know that I'm not alone in my relief that there is finally another store to browse.

kari 08-29-2006 09:15 PM

Too far away:biggrin:

rudy 08-29-2006 09:19 PM

BA Edmonton is opening a store here. I was there the other week and they said they were currently looking for space to which I replied....good luck.

I definately don't miss BA as a store, but do miss the inverts. That is the problem with Calgary stores. Tons of fish and not enough weird and whacky inverts and such.

Delphinus 08-29-2006 09:22 PM

I'll throw my $.02 in, that probably wasn't directed at me, but since I know I've whined about missing Big Als, I'll chime in anyhow. I never really "condemned" Big Als myself, I bought there regularly, knew the guys and got along well with them. They weren't perfect but no LFS is (I've seen the "good" LFS's on bad days and let me tell you, it wasn't pretty, if I based my opinions on what I saw on those days alone, I would never shop at the ones that everyone is so gaga over how good they are. The bottom line is, LFS's are run by people, people are not infallible and everyone has good days and everyone has bad days).

There were a few things that I was unhappy about, but I always communicated my issues with them. Sometimes we had to agree to disagree, most of the time though, I was a happy regular.

I, for one, have been whining about the lack of representation down south for a long time. So regardless of who's behind the endeavour, I'm happy there's a store opening that I can consider closer by.

The way I look at it, as a hobby addict, a store has to "try" to get me to stop buying there. Whether it's travel time, livestock conditions, pricing, customer service, etc. etc. (or some combination thereof), the "default" position is that I'll go check it out, and let's face it, a happy customer is a repeat customer so if all goes well I'll be a regular.

muck 08-29-2006 09:28 PM

Hopefully all goes well so Tony can stop his whining too..

Delphinus 08-29-2006 09:34 PM

Shush you. I'll find something else to annoy you with.

They can buy my condo:lol:

rudy 08-29-2006 09:45 PM

I was also going to say that we are not the only ones bitching.

One thing I am growing very tired of is stores (especially new stores) bad mouthing others. I think there is a ton of business out there and if there is no current store in the South I think a Niche could be carved pretty easily there. The same thing with the new store in the N.W. as I know I will shop there by virtue of the fact that it is close. What was said about you have to convince me not to shop at a store is very true. Who here honestly shops exclusively at one store? I have my loyalties, but if somebody else has something I want and I don't dispise shopping there I will.
The statement about "the store in the S.E. that does not quarantine their fish and that is why it is so cheap", or they get the mixed boxes where we get the quality hand picked fish" wears really thin.

I hope the new store takes the high road and focuses on their store rather than everybody elses.

Mad marketing and information gathering skillZ.

G1GY 08-30-2006 06:37 PM

I'm happy to see a store opening in the south. I for one am getting sick of the number of "southerners" plugging up the isles in the north stores!

The north stores have isles? Sweet! Having their own reef islands is WAY cooler than just having a bunch of aisles.

 You have to go pretty far north to shop at AI. The only real issue I have with them is they will not hold livestock for pick up later. I have asked them on several occassions while in Edmonton if I could pay for a coral now and pick it up in a day or two when I will be going home and the answer has always been no. That is the only store that has ever said that to me. It gives me the impression they lack confidence in what they sell. Other than that I suppose they're okay.

Now Gold's has been very good to me. Great people, great service.

Canadbis 08-31-2006 01:45 AM

I'm happy another store is opening, gives one more store to go and check out to see what is in stock.
Even the places that dont have the greatest quality/conditions still get a gem once in a while

RobbAdams 09-04-2006 06:30 PM
