another new tank
I just setup another tank.72x20x20 external overflow.I got the tank from golds, starfire front.Looks pretty nice.I just got finished plumbing and filling it up.No leaks!

Err, did you put a valve on one of the drains?
|
I only put a shut off valve on the pump. Was I suppose to put one on the drain pipe.
|
Yeah, you put one there to throttle back the drain. It makes the overflow box virtually silent.
You can still get one on there. I'll draw a quick diagram. |

Okay, so the idea here is that you run a stand pipe that nears the water level of the main display. The other drain just gets a grill. With the valve installed, you throttle the drain down until the water level rises just short of the standpipe. Bam, instant silent overflow with the added benefit of zero bubbles in the sump. |
Do you have the grill line and the standpipe line tied together after the valve before it goes into the sump ? Do you recomend a length or a specific distance ? Could you add a T below the top of the standpipe to increase flow ? Thanks.

Albert, I'll drop off some graph paper so the next time you can follow the lines with your crayon:idea:

i like how the water is aqua couour so we can tell where the water goes.

Stinky, do yourself a favour, don't bother with a ball valve or "gate valve" (as sold at western pump - actually a knife valve) to throttle the overflow down, www.mcmastercarr.com sells proper gate valves (threaded adjuster). Otherwise you'll be fiddling forever trying to get it right.
Albert - stop taking credit, you didn't come up with this design. Search RC for silent overflow, it's well detailed there. |
McMaster Carr actually no longer ships to Canada.

Yeah, hi, I'm not taking credit. Additionally, I've had at least ten people use this design perfectly well with a good quality ball-valve. I think the most time spent on the adjustment was somewhere in the neighborhood of five minutes. But hey, for anyone who wants to spend more than $25 on a valve, it's their money. And hey Andy, if you would like, please step up and take the throne to the Kingdom of Negative-attitudes. It's all yours. |
Alright people lets not get out of hand here keep it in the good books can we. the board is to special to be filling it with negative and crappy thoughts.
FOr the record I would not have a valve to throttle back a pump unless it is a pressure and still the only place to throttle a pump back is at the end of the line going out. there is to much pressure at the start of the pump and that is how seals are blown. If you want to throttle the pump back I think some one already said about a T joint and have a another line run back to the sump or to a Refuguim. That will work too. Having a grill on a over flow pipe is going to cause alot of trouble a ways down the road. I would have the full flow going to the main tank and you can always up grade the return line to a bigger pipe to get more volume then pressure . HTH Or may i misread the post any wyas keep us informed |
The pump isn't being throttled back. One of the drains is being restricted to fascillitate with noise reduction in the system.
