Lakes West of Edmonton?

I just got a canoe and am eager to paddle my ass around a lake, anybody know of some lakes west of Edmonton?

The closer the better, but if they are really nice could go further and camp.

Hubbles Lake by stony plain is a great little lake. Very clean and no motor boats aloud.

muck 06-07-2006 09:08 PM

Could hit up Hasse as well and bring your fly rod..

Murminator 06-07-2006 09:14 PM

or cruise the Pembina river

TheReefGeek 06-07-2006 09:28 PM

Hubbles Lake and Hasse, I will check them out thanks.

I am training my dog to be a boat-dog so I want to stay away from rivers for now but eventually I want to do some river trips, sounds like fun.

This is a pretty cool site I found.

Lac la biche, has cabins near it just north of town, a guy named Deisle owns the place, its a great place to stay cheap too. and if u like to fish Hart lake isnt far and its infested with pike. no joke every single cast you will catch a 4 foot pike. my dad and i last year caught 100 pike in one hour combined.

Richard

TheReefGeek 06-08-2006 02:37 PM

Lac la biche is a great place, they have a really neat campground/park where you have to cross a land bridge to get to it. It is 2 hours away, good for staying overnight on a weekend but a bit far for a day trip.

I can only find reference to a Hart lake in BC, do you mean Heart lake, which is NE of Lac la biche?

Beverly 06-08-2006 03:14 PM

Elk Island Park, east of Edmonton, is a great place to canoe. Not too far away, either.

Richard_Dicosimo 06-08-2006 03:32 PM

yes sorry i meant Heart Lake, not Hart lake

Richard

I hope your packing rain gear.

TheReefGeek 06-09-2006 07:13 PM

Enjoy the fishing!

I just bought all the basic fishing gear last night. If the rain clears up we are going to go to Lac Ste Anne, better knows as Alberta Beach. Can't keep any, but walleye fishing there is supposed to be an easy way to learn to fish.

Richard_Dicosimo 06-14-2006 05:47 AM

well no pics forgot the camera, but we caught about 300 pike. the limit is 3 total over 25" most where 24"-30" so no monsters unfortunately. the lake is INFESTED with pike. there are perch and walleye in heart but why would u want to fish for a fish u might catch, when u are garenteed a pike every other cast or even more frequently?

Richard

the limit on pike in lac la biche has been reduced to limit of one and there arent that many in there, or they arent as hungry.

TheReefGeek 06-14-2006 03:52 PM

Wow, awesome!

mark 06-14-2006 05:50 PM

Just come back from my second time out this year from camping at Carson-Pegasus Provincial Park, just west of Whitecourt.

Two lakes associate with it, one stocked with trout that love marshmallows.

TheReefGeek 06-14-2006 05:55 PM

I think I am going to have to find some more free weekends this summer!

Oh wow -- there's a blast from the past for me. I used to work up there (well, the Carson Creek gas plant) in the early 90's!! That is a -really nice- provincial park.

I remember once I was biking some 20km loop in the woods around there and I came across a sow and two cubs. Since I was by myself, I sort of thought, wow, this is it. In 2003 some hiker is just going to find a pile of bones and a rusty mountain bike. I have *never* pedalled so hard as I did that day, riding back to the car. On the other hand, maybe that would be fabulous way to train if you could pull that off 2, 3 times per week without managing to get eaten by the bears!!!

demon666 06-26-2006 07:34 PM

hey there rory.......

if you want to learn to fish there is this new place out here by spruce grove called "U-FISH" same concept as "u-pick" it is on some guys private land so there is no need for a licence and there are no limits on how many fish you take..... the pond is stocked with rainbow and steelhead trout..... the owner supplies everything from rod to reel to tackel ($7) too many ppl looseing hooks. he even supplies bait for fishing off the dock...... the cost is $1 per inch....... i took the kid and wife there yesterday and it only cost me 35 bucks i lost 2 hooks.... oh and if you dont loose ur hook you keep it.... we were there for 2.5 hours and had a blast..... a great place to learn how to cast....... my kid finally learned how to do it yesterday....... we only cought 1 fish in the 2.5 hours we were there but it was fun..... a private group came in when we were leaving and cought like 20 fish in about 15 min....damn there luck!!!!! a great place to learn how to fish!!!!!

TheReefGeek 06-26-2006 07:39 PM

I saw that driving back to Edmonton actually, it has a boat with a model of a fisherman out front on the corner?

What are the costs if you bring your own gear, do you know?

demon666 06-26-2006 07:49 PM

yup that is the place..... its still $1 an inch if you bring your own gear.... all you pay for is the fish..... oh and it is only open thursday - sunday

TheReefGeek 06-26-2006 07:59 PM

Good info, thanks.

I went out to Spring Lake nearbye to there, it is stocked. Got some nibbles, but never set the hook good enough to bring one in.

demon666 06-26-2006 08:11 PM

ya this place is great........ lots of nibbels but like i said i only got one..... should of had more but oh well.... at this place you are pretty much guarenteed to go home with something..... the guy just opened up so he is more or less over stocked right now....... when i went in on saturday to talk to them they figured they had roughly 17000 fish in the pond so you should be able to get something out of that pond.... oh there are carpe in the pond too but it will cost ya $100 if you want to keep it if you get on on the line..... oh ya and it isnt catch and release... so if you land it you must keep it no matter on how big it is.... the size is 10" the smallest in the pond and the only size that i cought...... upto 20" so good size fish........

TheReefGeek 06-26-2006 08:18 PM

Too bad they don't charge a fee per hour for catch and release.

demon666 06-26-2006 08:25 PM

he doesnt want dead fish floating in his pond from catch and release...... catchand release isnt always best if not done right of if the hook is enbedded in the gills or something the fish isnt going to make it anyway so it made as well be eaten by somebody....... see i dont like fish but i like fishing..... so the inlaws or my mom get the fish.... i dont keep them myself....

TheReefGeek 06-26-2006 08:42 PM

$1.00 per inch is pretty pricey though, expensive way to learn to fish.

Maybe good for the absolute newbie without any gear to give it a try once or twice though.

I have fished a couple times now, so this would be a bit too expensive for me, but thanks for the info!

demon666 06-26-2006 08:44 PM

well its only expensive if you catch fish if ya dont then its verry cheap....

TheReefGeek 06-26-2006 08:45 PM

lol, true enough! I would be afraid of catching the "big one" though!

demon666 06-26-2006 08:47 PM

its good for ppl like me who dont fish verry often so it isnt really practical to get a licence and i dont have a boat and there arent many places to fish off of docks out here so it works for me pluse it is so close to my house its great

TheReefGeek 06-26-2006 08:58 PM

Spring Lake is only a few minutes from Spruce Grove, it is a couple minutes from Beach Corner.

They have a couple hundred feet where you can fish from shore right by a nice drop-off.

Spring Lake is stocked with Trout, and has lots of Perch, you could head out there next time.

A fishing license is $22 if you have an $8 WIN card, or $30 total if you don't.

muck 06-26-2006 09:00 PM

Hasse has a dock you can fish off of. Thats only a few minutes from you as well..

demon666 06-26-2006 09:46 PM

really???? didnt know spring lake had a good shore line to fish from nor that hasse had a dock

TheReefGeek 06-26-2006 09:50 PM

Spring lake does cost $5.00 for a vehicle to enter the day-use area though, where the shoreline fishing is. There is washrooms, and basketball and volleyball nets, and picnic benches for eating, and I think there was a little park for the kids...

demon666 06-26-2006 10:18 PM

oh ill have to check it out...... now that ive got the fishing bug again..... yesterday was my first fish i have ever cought during the sommer months...... i prefer ice fishing........ maybe ill have to go tomorrow seeing as ill be going to work on wed and wont beable to go fishing for 2 weeks.......... anybody want to go fishing tomorrow?????
