Watchman & Pistol

Been waiting a long time to capture a shot of this symbiosis. Turns out the better half has more luck than me!

He's gone from just over an inch to almost 3 inches in just under a year now. He's strong too, keeps stealing my zoo frags to build his condo!

Very cool Danny. I wonder what would happen if you got your watchman a wife. Would they both live with the pistol? I have a pair and have thought about adding a pistol for them someday.

I believe the yellow is the male and the whitish/greyish one with blue fins is the female. That is what I was told. My pair is one of each. I can email you a picture.

I think your talking about two different species there, as I had a mated pair who were both bright yellow and spawned in my tank on a few occasions. The female does turn a darker color prior to birth, however her color did return back to normal after a few weeks.

I've been wondering about this since I bought my YWG a couple months ago. Its white with gray bands and has the bluish fins and spots. I bought it as a Yellow Watchman, but have been wondering if it is actually different species.

I got it to replace my pink spot gobie that disappeared leaving my pistol shrimp lonley. They paired up and seem quite happy digging and hiding in the tunnels.

Anyone have any more info on this colour variation?

Here's an image of my mated pair of yellow watchmen's guarding there clutch of eggs, as you can see in the picture they are both yellow in color.

I have a yellow and one identical to the one Ed describes.
I bought them as a m&f pair about 15-16 months ago.
They haven't actually spawned but the seem to be shacked up and happy together.
Perhaps I have some sort of inter-racial fish romance going on.

Rich were you able to raise any of the fry or did they become caviar for some other fish?

TheReefGeek 06-05-2006 04:04 PM

Very cool pics. Anybody know what would happen to a mated pair if a pistol shrimp was introduced?
