Cheap fuge lighting
So I need to light a very small fuge. At Rona they have these little halogen work lamps with a 150 watt bulb for $12. Would this be good to use or is that not a good type of light and I should go with a small pc fixture?
Thanks |
re lighting
I am looking at using a couple of clamp type desk lamps using those Power Compact Engery Saving light bulbs...2 25 W bulbs give off equivilant of 200 W.
Has anyone tried these before? |
Many of us use the Phillips Daylight CFL bulbs 27w over our fuges. A clip on light or an old incandescent light strip will be good enough.

I would think the 150w work light would be just fine, very yellow likely, but that is no problem for algae, assuming that is all you are trying to grow.

I use those PC eco lights in my sump. They look like crap, but algae loves them. I actually wondered that too reg. halogen bulbs. You can get a 200 watt bulb IN a fixture for really really cheap. They run really hot, but still, with all that light - it may be worth it. Has anyone used halogen lights in a sump, heck, anyone used them in a display tank with actinics. Realistically, you could have 20 - 30 of the tubes on a 55 gal tank, and you would still have room (and money) to have 4 X 96 watt PC actinic bulbs. Any thoughs on this? I know there are a lot of light guru's (Ahem, Bob_I, Harvey, Dez...) out there who have already though of this, so why didn't you go this route?

Go to London Drugs. They have clip on desk lamps & double 27w Phillips Daylight CFL bulbs for $7 on special. You can get set up for $14+tax.

Does anyone know where to get this bulb recommended by Marc (Melev) in Canada (specifically around Vancouver)?

Well, I picked up one of those halogen work lights. It's just the right size and provides a lot of light. The downside that I can see so far is there is a bit of light spill obviously, and QUITE a lot of heat. I think I might put it out in the garage where it was really designed for and see if I can find one of those Phillips bulbs. I'm not complaining for $12 though.
Can anyone tell me off the top of their head how large the Phillips bulbs are? I'm only trying to light a space about 4x6 inches. I would guess being 'daylight' bulbs they'd be somewhere around the 6700K range? |
