Trip to Calgary

I will be coming down to Calgary the weekend on March 11th, and will have a couple hours to check out some fish stores on the Sunday.

Where do you recommend I look? I have read Golds as a good vendor, any others?

OCDP 02-27-2006 04:08 PM

Great places to check out.... IMO.

Gold's, Wai's and Ocean Aquarium. All great stores. I say nothing more ! :D

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 04:10 PM

I will be staying a couple blocks from Pete's drive in.

What order would I hit those stores in from there?

mr_alberta 02-27-2006 04:11 PM

Wai's is across the street from Pete's Drive-In.

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 04:14 PM

Sweet, so I imagine I start there. :)

then where to? OA or Golds?

mr_alberta 02-27-2006 04:16 PM

Then head north on Center Street to OA Calgary. Then hop onto DeerFoot (I think) and go WAY southeast to Golds.

whonow 02-27-2006 04:18 PM

there is also big als. who I know has new stuff coming in this week for saltwater. Not to praise or anything...

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 04:20 PM

We have BAs here, so I will probably skip that one.

Any estimate of drive time between OA and Golds?

Golds has reasonably priced Seio's, is that right? I have never tried one and might pick some up to test.

OCDP 02-27-2006 04:24 PM

Yup, that's Gold's

Don't be suprised that when you go there, you find they have the best price for almost everything they sell. Not just their Seio's  (of course, IMO)

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 04:27 PM

Good to know.

whonow 02-27-2006 04:28 PM

no matter where you go in calgary. any vendor for that matter...between calgary and edmonton. Prices are so different it really is like night and day. even if you do have a big A's is edmonton...most of the time between edmonton and calgary I find for corals prices are cheaper down here by close to 30 or 40$, even if it is a franchised store...

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 04:32 PM

Where abouts is BA in Calgary?

whonow 02-27-2006 04:33 PM

heritage drive and macleod trail.. It is in a complex with Winners..easy to find..

Skimmer Juice 02-27-2006 05:30 PM

You could also go to riverfront if you just want to look. They usualy have cool fish out of the ordinary.Oceans and awi's are 5 minutes apart.Big al's sucks for fish, corals, only good for little inverts like crabs and shrimp.

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 05:36 PM

I think my plan then is to checkout awi's and OA then head to Golds, probably all the time I will have to spare.

I have a choice to make though, I will have a 5g bucket with a heater and a powerhead, and I have a power inverter in my car so I can run both on my drive back.

Should I keep the fish/corals bagged and float them in my 5g bucket, or acclimate them to the bucket and just go that route?

muck 02-27-2006 05:47 PM

awi's = wai's :mrgreen:

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 05:50 PM

Noted, thanks :)

midgetwaiter 02-27-2006 05:51 PM

Leave them bagged and put them in a cooler or styro box. I tank stuff back and forth to Edmonton all the time, it's not exactly problem free but pretty much the less you mess with it the better. Ask the store to double bag everything for you to be on the safe side.

trip

you could also use heat packs. put them in a towel and put them in the cooler. i have used the ones you get at a drug store the ones for back pain

TheReefGeek 02-27-2006 06:22 PM

Heat packs are a good idea if I go the cooler/styro route, thanks Ed.

Murminator 02-27-2006 07:18 PM

I used a gel heat/cold pack and heated up in a microwave at a gas station and duct taped to the top of the cooler worked like a charm

I have foam coolers you can have if needed. :)

TheReefGeek 02-28-2006 06:04 AM

I think I will do the 5g bucket with a heater, then I know the temperature is right instead of approximate with heat packs and such.

I will just float the bags, and acclimate when I get home.
