Protopaly thread!!!
This has to be one of my favorites. They grow huge, sometimes bigger than quarters. They also havent been the slowest either,i get a few poyps every week or so.In some lighting they also get a green skirt!http://www.canreef.com/photopost/dat...600_x_450_.jpg
sorry guys, they arent for sale. :frown: |
I have the same ones.
Out of curiousity what lighting are you running deacon? |
Only a 96 powerquad and they are 15 inches below! Yours look different under MH correct?
|
those are freakin awesome haha... need to find me some of those bad boys
|
I had no idea until last week that those buttons could come in different colours. I've got some greenish ones in one tank and about a zillion brown ones in amongst my tanks.
Red though ... that is very cool. Thanks for posting the picture. |
I think protopalys are the sweetest of all zoo's they are really colorfull, bigger than a pencil eraser, and come in cool two tone morphs. They are in the same family as purple people eater,RPE,ect.
EDIT: the speckelled ones in different colors are also quite nice. Please people post pics of your sweet palys!!! cmon!! |
I have those too.

Ive seen that they get a nice salmon color under MH lighting, what color bulb do you run?
|
Could someone who knows post the difference between zoanthids, and Palythoa  I sold my corals book, and don't know the difference.
I remember having some green button polyps that wanted to take over the tank. |
Palythoa are the matting type that encrust like a GSP.Protopalys look like a big zoanthid usually more colorfull and dont share a continous mat.Green button polyps are proto's.Acual paly's you dont see to often and they are usually tan, brown, green.Hope this helps.

So then.... which are these? Protopalys?? Looking a little rough in this picture due to the constant stinging from the frog spawn. Looks better now that I moved it.

Those are protopaly's
|
Thanks for the ID
|
So then are Protopalythoa connected at all  , or are they unconnected polyps like Yellow Polyps.
I also read something about a single row of tentacles versus a double row. I can't remember the significance anymore  |

heres what a palythoa looks like, and yes proto's are connected but much like a zoo.Not always tight mat type, spread out and still connected.

Beauties!!! love the stardust type proto's.

Sweet pics guys. I've got both the salmon ones and the pinks that Snappy has. My salmon ones are just starting to get back to the nice bright color they were when I got them, not quite at the pic you posted Snappy, what K lighting do you have them under?
The pinks are quite prolific once they get going. I didn't think I'd have much success just cramming them on the rocks but they seem to be taking off just in this last little while. I guess I must be doing something right  |

I have a big "bunch" of the red/salmon ones that I keep fairly high in the tank but off to the side under 400W MH and they are growing quite well. I also have the pink ones that are not doing so hot (light pink) I have moved them as they were getting quite shaded by my monti cap so hopefully they will pick up and grow.
I love the red ones. I bought them from Sleeman when I bought some of his other corals. |
My order came in today from marine aquaria (ultimate frags) so I have a new pic of proto's for you
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...816zoo0025.jpg and this is only 5 hrs after being added to the tank and nearly 48hrs in transit  |
Wow those look awesome!!! Great score!
|
