There's a New Tank in Town....

I've decided to step away from the mainstream reefkeeping mentality....

Finding that UBER Acan, SPS, or Zoo etc is so overrated! Who isn't looking for the latest and greatest? EVERYBODY and their grandmother is in on the business and I'm tired of it!

I'm thinking it's time to sell off the corals.. and set up a Refugium style set-up. In my 65g I intend to pack it full of various exotic live rock from all over the world, I estimate 200lbs should be about right.

I'll fill in any empty spaces with exotic Macro Algae... Red Halimenia, Caulerpa, etc.. hell even Hair Algae is welcome in this tank....

Position my two 250w MH, and 10k Actinics over this bad boy and watch the life emerge from the rock.

I can probably get away with not having a skimmer on it too.

Just imagine all the pods, crabs, and hitchhikers I would get to observe. Best of it.. It's FREE.

Man I can't wait.

Top down view.

OK.

Calm down lady.

Put the coral down and step away from the tank.

Just sit down, breathe deeply & relax. The anxiety attack will pass.

Don't worry, temporary insanity is becoming ever more common.

Forget about thinking outside the box, what bout RIGHT, RIGHT inside it? What if you had a display tank that did nothing but show off Ebo-Jagers? Eh? Take that in-line thinkers!

Well heck, I've done that algae filled refugium style tank for the past couple of years I set the trend before it was trendy!! I've always tried to be an individual in my reefing styles, even when I desperately want to follow the trends. But even that gets boring at some point. Why bother having a glass tank when you can't see in it anyways  Its only recently that I've decided that going my own way is boring, I need to jump on that bandwagon of trendsetters and let go of my need for algae. Its my time! Shine on you crazy diamond!

Too much mercury in the sushi you've been eating

I agree with some of the replies. I am living proof you don't need the latest and greatest. I have been successfully running simple reef tanks for the last five years without needing Skimmers, RO/DI water, sumps, and any of the other gadgets some folks feel are necessary. Why, I even sell zoos.

I agree with some of the replies. I am living proof that you don't need to drive a Volkswagen in order to buy gas as the gas station. I have been successfully running around the block without using parafin wax or any of the other gadgets some folks feel are necessary. Why, I even work as a software developer.

What if by starting this thread you, yourself start a new trend in refugium style display tanks? hmmm? think about that one haha.....

trilinearmipmap 10-26-2005 07:38 PM

Perhaps you could run a full-blown reef in the sump, to provide nutrients for your refugium tank.

Xtasia 10-26-2005 07:39 PM

I could get a mantis shrimp..

I wouldn't be a slave to the LFS for livestock anymore....

Tons of Tonga rock. Tons of Pretty macros....

Save on skimmer costs.

It's the Saltwater "Planted Tank".

Xtasia 10-26-2005 07:40 PM

I like that idea.. a nano sump.. with some corals...

He said, tongue firmly planted in cheek. :BIG:

I thought he was serious. I've seen many people in our red light district buy gas without owning a car ;)

Bob, I'm sensing from your posts lately that you are needing some sort of affirmation in your reefkeeping. So here you go!

This thread is too much.

But all jokes aside, its a great idea. Niche' tanks are cool and there are a lot of options out there that most haven't even thought of. Go for it.

FYI here is an updated picture of my tank!

christyf5 01-04-2006 10:18 PM

Ebo-Jagers are a brand of heater. I believe Eheim bought them out so they're either Jager or Eheim-Jager now
