Powerhead Reccomendations
 

Howdy everone,

Well, my dad(wow hes going to participate in costs for the tank lol), has offered to contribute $$$ for new powerheads for the tank. Im debating with going with either 2 Seio 820's or 1 Tunze 6060.

The setup is 75g and these will be the only providers of flow ontop of the MJ-1000 feeding the above tank refugium/sump. The tank dimensions are 48x18x20. It will be fairly open rockwork.

what type of corals do yo want to keep?

Ohh I've already got corals, mix of LPS, SPS and Softies.

Alrighty. I was thinking about the tunze, but the fact that I could get a more random or unsusual current by using he two seio pumps might be better.

I've got a pair of the seio 620's in my 40g and I love them. Very quiet, wide flow (not pressure washer like), don't generate a lot of heat and lots of different mounting options.

I dont know call me crazy but I would go with the 2 820's because with the 2 seios you can direct both in different areas of the tank to take out more dead spots. I have 2 1100's on my 95 gal and love it.

Im sure my dad would prefer I went with the Seio's as they are cheaper and I like the fact I can get more random currents. Hmm.

I think I just may go with the seios, hehe.

Got for a pair of Seio m2600 :eek:

I think they are around $80USD each which isn't bad considering the flow you get (2600GPH).

They are large and pretty power hungry though :sad:

I've got 2 820's and a 620 in my 77

On one hand

I still havn't spent as much as the Tunze would cost :cool:

On the other;

I'm running out of space to put the powerheads... and am seriously thinking replacing the 620 with a 6100 + controller

I have a Tunze 6100 on a controller for my 72g...there is no comparison :biggrin: More money, but if you count the seio and four maxijets that I had before...

I gotta agree.... 6100 or bust... might seem like overkill, but you can dial it down, and you always have headroom... ONE will be PLENTY for your 72... and they're SO adjustable... :biggrin:

I have a 70g, and I started w/ 2 seio820's and the sump return (~1200gph) I took one of the seios out and sold it because it was truly too much flow. In the "jet" config, they have a lot of throw in a 4' tank.
As far as which brand, I've only used Sieo and I love it.

Well, I don't have a large system like all you folks :razz: But, I do have a Seio and I really like the flow patterns it gives off... very wide range and just not like your average powerhead at all. Also, as mentioned.. extremely versatile in terms of mounting. A bang for your buck IMO.

Unforunately the Tunze im looking at is the one without the controller with just a straight 1600 gph flow.

Im thinking I may just go with the Seio 820's but it was suggested I get a larger seio model? I dont know who carries any Seio powerheads in Canada besides J&L? I might go with I think its the 1100 and an 820 or whatever the next size up was?

I'd go with the two seio 820s. Like it was said before, it'd give you more flexibility in terms of directing water movement and reducing dead spots. I had a 620 and an 820 plus ~600gph from the sump on my old 30g half cube and I found that flow was about right (BB mixed reef tank)... if I did it again, I'd probably replace that 620 with an 820.

If you are heading down to Calgary, check out Golds for their seios. They are priced like J&L (or cheaper?).

Just a return to this thread...

It looks like I will be getting a pair of Seio 1100's. I also have about 100gph from my refugium(yeah, not much) and im wondering if this will be too much flow in the tank from the two 1100's?

I double the nope :biggrin: I have 2 x 1100's plus a mag 9.5 on my 95 gal tank and its fine.

Well, my father picked these up today from Gold's in Calgary(Wow, What a guy Denis is, the store was closed today and Denis opened it up for my Father so he could pick-up the SEIOs).

I threw one in the tank, boy does it throw alot of water! Infact I find it throws too much right now.... I may turn them down a little and likely aim them at each other almost, and also try to set-up my rockwork so I can hide things like the frogspawn, clam, and brain, from the intense currents. It lifted alot of junk off the bottom of the tank, so I think my new "glued on gravel" bottom that I will have will be better.

I guess I'll have to get more SPS seeing as these throw alot of water! Haha.
