Need more pods

so I've got my 20, PACKED with pods, I turn out the lights at night and with a flashlight you can see a frenzy of the little guys everywhere, but my 70, alas is lacking in them. I've transfered some sandbed, even tried one of those booster packs from Aquarium Illusions, I just want to make sure there is enough for my scooter blenny.

Looking forward to the responses.
I don't have much of a pod population in my tank.

Even though I have macros and a refugum.

Certain fish will decimate a pod population. What kinds of fish do you guys have that might be eating your pods?

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 03:18 AM

2 tangs
6 line
2 clown
bi-colour dotty

recently added mandrian. which i know eats pods, but i didn't have a lot before...... <<put flame resistant brief on>>

6 line is a pod eatting machine.

Cheers,

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 03:20 AM

ok, prior to him, i still hardly had any pods.
6-line and mandrian were introduced at the same time.

Funky_Fish14 09-13-2005 04:10 AM

The dottyback is also eating pods! I'd reccomend taking at least one of those out unless they are eating prepared/frozen food.

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 04:12 AM

actually the dotty and 6line are all eating prep/frozen food. no worries there.

the mandrian.... well in the 4 weeks I've had him, i've only seen him a handfull of times. no shruken stomach yet. he's always hiding in the back behind the rocks...

mr_alberta 09-13-2005 04:39 AM

Do you have sand in your tank? BB tanks won't have nearly the same number of pods as tanks with sand. If you want more pods, start feeding more, just watch the water quality!

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 04:43 AM

yup about 3" of sand.

about 6" CC in the refuge.

scare to feed the tank too much as it has lead me to cyano outbreaks.

Try building a few small pod piles in the back of the tank. Just pile up a bunch of rubble and as long as the crevices between the rubble is too small for the fish to get in the pods should be able to breed in relative safety.

Another option is to add a big ball of chaeto to your fuge. My chaeto is litteraly crawling with pods. They seem to love that stuff.

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 04:54 AM

I am thinking about importing some pods.
Anybody in the LM have a ball of chaeto crawling with pods??

oh and sorry for the hi-jack....

Ruth 09-13-2005 05:06 AM

Agree with Muck - my cheato is also crawling with pods. When I harvest - which I have to do every 2 weeks at least, before I throw it in the garbage I will shake the ball of chaeto into my water change water as I usually harvest and change water on the same day.

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 05:07 AM

Hmm... although I don't have chaeto, I do have calurpera in my fuge.
Does the macro matter?

Funky_Fish14 09-13-2005 05:10 AM

Cheato tends to grow more densly and provide better cover.

Chris

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 05:12 AM

In my fuge, I can see some pods in between the CC. These are the 'shrimpy' looking ones. I can also see tiny tiny white specs crawling on the acrylic just at the CC line. But never anywhere else.

adidas 09-13-2005 05:35 AM

do you feed phytoplankton to your tank? feed those pods well.

4ptbuck 09-13-2005 10:23 AM

I tried a bottle of DTs once. I didn't really do anything for the tank.

No matter how well fed a six line is, it will always pick pods off your rocks. Probably the same with the dotty.

Gizmo 09-13-2005 09:09 PM

I have the crushed coral bed in my 20, lots o pods there, i have a 3" sand bed (fine sand) in the 70g and I haven't see too many.

Funky_Fish14 09-13-2005 11:08 PM

They do better in the larger grain size because the spaces allow them to get in better(especially the smaller ones till they grow).
