Algae Problem

Lately I've been having a rash of algae bloom in my tank. Just the standard green, no hair or anything like that just a green slime on all the glass, noticable growth on a daily basis. Its starting to grow on the rocks and air bubbles seem to be retained against the algae, how can I get rid of this? The water quality has been great using RO/DI, No nitrates, I did have some Phosphate in the water about 2 weeks ago, but I removed it using phosban. SO. any ideas?

Do you have any snails to help keep in under control on the rocks at least. Other than that just watch the phosphates and nitrates. What phosphate test kit are you using?

Salifert I do have snails, and they are trying to do their best but its a lot of algae

Try a sea hare.

1. Sea hares seem to be not in season... no idea why.

2. This thing is getting WAY out of control and I am at a loss to why. I'm going to take a pic as soon as I can for you all to see. Its driving me to the point of throwing the towel in. Its not bubble algae, not hair algae, and not cyano. its green and it creates bubbles EVERYWHERE. Its starting to get to the corals and I'm getting very worried. PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!! Will post pics soon.

The bubbles makes me think it is Cyano. Cyano is not necessarily red. When I lived in Vancouver it was black, and I think I have seen green too. :eek:

hmm kind of does look like cyano.

Gizmo 08-12-2005 12:37 AM

The last was just a cool pic of some shrooms

Gizmo 08-12-2005 12:39 AM

I dont get it. I eliminated ALL my phosphate in the water, the skimmer is working normally, I use RO/DI. @#%($%^&%$(*^(@$&%(@*% :evil: Hate this #$#

OCDP 08-12-2005 12:41 AM

The first two pics definitely look like cyano to me.

Try to think of how this could have happened... what have you done to the tank lately? if anything.. has anything died? new lights? overfeeding?

Gizmo 08-12-2005 12:46 AM

New MH's about 3 weeks ago. Other than that. Nothing new.

I just tested the water again.

Nitrites = 0
Ammonia = 0
PH = 8.2
Nitrates = 0-5
PO4 = 0

It also wasn't NEAR this bad until I actually started using RO/DI a couple of weeks back too.

Bob I 08-12-2005 12:48 AM

Those pictures are far too big. :mad:

OCDP 08-12-2005 12:51 AM

I'm thinking maybe it could be from halides.. but 3 weeks is a while. I am not sure if they could be the cause..

And yes.. the pics are a little on the huge side lol

rickjames 08-12-2005 12:57 AM

When you say new halides, do you mean new bulbs or an upgrade to MH?

Gizmo 08-12-2005 12:58 AM

New halides to the tank. Never had them until then

Looks like the dinoflagellates that Tony had awhile back. Here are a couple of threads about the stuff:

Thanks Beverly, that sounds errily familiar, I am going to shut down the MH's over the weekend while I go on vacation. Hopefully when I get back it will start to get it. Stupid Snot. :evil:
