what can i grow?
i am going to be getting a 75 gal tank 48x19x19 which i will run power compacts 2x65 watt atinics and 2x55 watt 10000k's
what types of corals will i be able to grow with this type of lighting and how much flow is required ? sps lps soft? thanks |
With that lighting, I would stick to LPS and Softies only. You'll also need a lot less flow with these types of corals.
|
that isnt much light for a 75.
|
If you are going to stick with PC lighting I would recommend using a second fixture of the same combination of lights. That way you should be good with most softies and leathers although you will have to place some higher in the tank.
|
Under that light you can keep and keep well quite alot of corals some of sps and clams will not fair well, lps and soft will do great and with some research you will be able to find a nice selection of sps,its all about were you place them, sps near the top and lps from the middle on down,i have 260w pc and one no actinic over my 90 and eveything does great,i can send a list of what i keep there are lps.sps, soft a mushrooms in there.

I think he has 260W - notice he said 2X each bulb.
|
But most of that is 130w of actinic, which isn't as useful to corals for growth as more 10000k would be. Actinics do provide some but not nearly as much useful light spectrum as more white light would & its more for our "viewing pleasure". When I switched out my 50/50s for straight 10000k bulbs, it made a huge difference in growth.

2x65 watt atinics and 2x55 = 260w
That plus one no actinic is what i have over mine and everything is doing well. |
Actually John,
2 x 65w = 130w & 2 x 55w = 110w 130w + 110w = 240w  (and most of this is actinic). Fortunately, his tank is only 19" deep so if he stacks his LR & places the higher light requiring corals up high, like some have suggested, he can keep a decent selection of corals. Softies: Leathers (except Fiji yellows), mushrooms, zoos, xenias/anthelias & clove polyps would be fine. LPS: Open brains, candycanes, blastomussas, bubble, pearl bubble & fox corals. SPS: Maybe green/brown digitata - anything else would lose its colour & not do well under this lighting. JMO, Anthony Anthony |
kool thanks for the info
dead by dawn can u post some pics of ur tank in here? |
Montipora digita (green)
" " (brown) Euphila glabrescens Euphila divisa Trachyphilla geoffroyi Caulastrea furcata Symphyllia Valenoiennesii Cynarina deshayesiana Turbastraea faulkneri Turbastrea diaphana Clavularia sp Briareumsp sp Alcyanium sp Sarcophyton sp Paralemnalia sp Antheila sp Xenia sp Gorgonia ventalina Fish fox face six line wrasse eight blue green chromis copperband butterfly And a selection of crabs etc no3 hovers around 15ppm.cal 420 pp ..I will post some pics asoon as i get some  |
Would it not be more precise to say one could maintain these corals, not grow? I have 4x65 Watt PC lights and Corals survive but they don't grow!
I would say buy large specimens and stay away from Frags  |
I had 160watts of NO lighting. 80watts Atinic 80watts 10000k in a 90g tank. I had no problem with LPS or Softies they all did well and grew quite fast. Had it that way for 5 years.
Just my 2 cents |

Was not pointing the finger there  I run 260 watts over my tank with good water parameters but I get 0 growth. Glad to hear others are doing well. Myself, MH is in my future!
|
I've got a 120g that has 2x 55w of PC and 40w of NO actinic. Doesn't sound like much light, but compared to our 67g with 360w of VHO and a 37g with 175w of MH, the 120g is by far the brightest looking tank. All bulbs/tubes were changed at the same time this spring.
Anyway, the 120g grows magnificent xenia, mushrooms, GSP, BSP, various macroalgae and pretty good coraline. Haven't tried any lps in the tank because of a coral nipping lattice butterfly. I try to keep alk at 8-10 dKH, Ca at 400- 425 ppm and Mg at 1300-1325 ppm in all three tanks. |
thanks for all the helpful info and tips from everyone. if in the future i plan to run halides what do u recomend using for attinics and where can i pick one up?
