PVC Glue
 

Hey everyone,

So I've got a real important question, what do you all use for glue for doing your plumming?! Also, is there a better type of PVC to use?

Just regular stuff you get from home depot. Just make sure you get the pink/purple cleaner as well.

Or the clear primer :mrgreen: I go to a plumbing wholesaler and buy clear primer and clear glue.

Yup it is called PVC glue and PVC primer

Oatey Purple PVC primer/cleaner and Oatey PVC clear cement.

When you use it you gotta be fairly quick with putting the pieces together. The two products chemically react with each other and actually cause the PVC to "weld" together.

in the IPS Weld-On brand (many flavors available....)

#725 Wet 'R Dry or #747 Pool 'R Spa will glue both rigid and flex pvc without needing the primer - one can will do anything you want to do


If you can't find that then use #P-70 primer (in purple or clear) with:

#795 for flex pvc pipe

#700, 702, 704, 705, 710, 711, or 717 ( & probably a couple others I can't remember) for rigid pvc pipe. All do the same thing, just different colors, weights, set times, etc - all which don't mean too much in hobby apps.

You can also use the Oatey Grey 1 step cement, as long as you're not running a 5000gph pump with 16' of head height. (low pressure applications like most reefing applications are fine for this cement)

All the primer does is soften the PVC a little so when the glue bonds ot makes a better seal..

I used to install underground irragation at the local college The primer is meant for systems under pressure.

Still it does not hurt to use it.. I have used the primer here as I know the joints will be perfectly sealed.

One of the things I learned today...yes, I learned more than one thing....is that the only reason some PVC primers are colored purple is so a building inspector can see that the plumbing has been installed with the cement and the primer. When the inspector sees the purple smeared on the pipe, they know primer has been used.
Soooo, if you don't plan on having your aquarium plumbing inspected, or don't have to, then the clear primer is the way to go, thus avoiding the ugly purple smears!

Yes the color has nothing to do with anything. its a visual thing.. When I was installing irragation at MRC it was easier to see where you primed by looking at it, much better than the clear stuff, you did not want to mess up priming a 4" main only to have it blow under pressure :)
