Welcome from Southern BC.

trilinearmipmap 07-07-2005 05:19 PM

Hello Ruth.

It is hard having a reef in the boonies isn't it, supplies and livestock aren't close at hand.

Tell us a little bit about your system and inhabitants please.

Ruth 07-07-2005 05:33 PM

Boy you got that right! Thankfully I travel quite a bit with my job so am able to take advantage of that to pick us some things when I am in the city (Usually Edmonton or Calgary)
I struggled for a couple of years with a 77g and a 135 gallon, neither of which was drilled so was using canister filters - never again!
I now have a 230g with a 77g. sump/refugium with about 400lbs of live rock. Lighting is 3X400W MH with 4X PC. I have had this set up since last December and it is coming along very nicely. I have 2 false percula clowns and 2 sebae clowns each hosting their own anemone. In addition I have a hippo tang, a yellow tang, coral beauty, firefish, 2 mandarins, an algea blennie, a hector's gobie and a clown gobie. I have some zoos, soft corals like toadstools and zenia and a few LPS, frog spawn-elegance-pagoda-open brain.
I also have a 12 and 24g. JBJ nano cubes at home that are just finishing cycling and a 12g. at work with varios zoos and a tomatoe clown and blue devil damsel.
I am going to be setting up a 190g with a 90g fuge/sump in the very near future which will be a SPS tank.
Holy cow it makes me tired just typing all that!

trilinearmipmap 07-07-2005 05:37 PM

OK with all those tanks you are more insane than I am.

that cant possibly be true

Ruth 07-07-2005 06:13 PM

I'll have to spend more time on here before I can offer up an opinion on that.
Out of curiosity where do you get most of your supplies from?

Hardware/equipment: J & L, MOPS, Premium Aquatics, ReefGeek
Live Rock: Hidden Reef (excellent)
Fish: J & L
Corals: Ocean Aquatics, trades with other Canreef members

Ruth 07-07-2005 08:30 PM

I am in the market for some live rock for my new tank. When I googled Hidden Reef the web site said they only ship to the US? Is this the right site or do you have a link to one that ships to Canada?

The store is in Abottsford, BC and doesn't have a website currently.

Hi Ruth! My sister-in-law is from your town. You must be OK.

Ruth 07-07-2005 09:06 PM

I hope so except I seem to have this aquariumitis that I just can't control. Maybe there is a support group somewhere?

christyf5 07-07-2005 09:27 PM

Haha, you've found it

Welcome to Canreef

Christy :)

Welcome to Canreef!

Ruth 07-07-2005 09:55 PM

I have posted a few pictures in my gallery. I cannot seem to attach thumbnails or photos in this forum. Another case of the machine being smarter than I am!

Ruth 07-07-2005 10:11 PM

Hey Christy I notice that you are from Naniamo. I was just down there last weekend as my family all live there - hense I live way up here. Anyway would love to see your tank sometime when I am down?

christyf5 07-07-2005 10:25 PM

Sure, let me know when you're down next

Welcome to Canreef Ruth

Tom R 07-08-2005 03:37 AM

Welcome Ruth

I ran into a fellow reefer at J&L on the weekend she was from up north and she was buying up a storm. I recommended her to Canreef. By any chance was that you.

Tom R

Ruth 07-08-2005 03:44 AM

That's me! Hello.

Tom R 07-08-2005 10:55 PM

I told you that Canreef was site that would interesting you.
Hope all your purchases made the trip OK. I bought a dottyback who has since jumped out of the tank and died. It is most upsetting when something like that happens. You spend all that time picking the best in the store.

I noticed another thread of yours asking about water top off. I have my RO/DI set up with an auto shutoff to a 45G food grade barrel and a gravity feed to a Kent float valve in my sump. This fully automatic without any dosing pumps and works well.
Next time your in Vancouver let me know and I will show you how it works.

Thanks Tom. It was great to meet you and thanks for referring me to this site. It's great to talk to some people from the west. I have ordered a top up system from Harvey that looks like it will work great but would still love to see your system and tank too!
So far everything is doing well but the clam is not opening as much as I would like. I will give him a few more days and then maybe try moving him up in the tank a little. I have it in the sand bed so the light might not be penetrating far enough for his liking.

When you find that support group...let me know...
I have;
65g hex reef
50g FOWLR
135g discus...that keeps telling me..."wow with a couple of overflow boxes I would look really good as a reef tank...."
my husband just cringes...
WELCOME to the board...its a world of info and fun!

SeaHorse_Fanatic 07-12-2005 06:52 AM

Heck, I'm moving to a bigger place just to have bigger tanks. Already have a 7' fowlr & 6' reef tank cycling at the new place & I'm not moving till July 31. Thank God I have a wife who enjoys this hobby (about 10% as much as me of course). Again, Ruth, welcome to the reefer addict board.

Anthony

PS. I've already run out of space in the new place & we haven't even moved in yet.

Ruth 07-12-2005 12:49 PM

OMG, I have an appointment to talk to an architect about drawing up some blueprints to have an addition added onto my house and it will have a - gulp- fish room so I can plan for a 4 or 500g system. Anthony I had not even thought about the bigger place thing, I have to admit that I did think about moving as well but the thought of moving a 230g and a 190g makes me cringe.

Ruth
