Hello,

What fish is this? How long and how bad is the situation? Maybe a quick fresh dip would be a better and faster solution.

Well it started with a Kole, which stressed b/c of a resident Yellow Tang. When I got things sorted out there, by rearrangement, he already was stressed and developed ick. After a few days that went away, but now a week later it's back, and this time it's infected 2 sleepers, and a clarkii

I don't think a dip will do..

I'm treating with garlic and selcon
FlameAngel

P/S: I'm confident in the recovery of the other fish due to the fact that they eat the food I provide. The Kole has yet to do this and remains a nervous fish.

What do you think I should do?

I would not consider putting chemicals in a reef tank. You had sucess with the garlic, continue. You need to feed just garlic soaked food for a couple of weeks. The garlic likely killed the ich on the fish but was still in the water.
Place a large piece of garlic soaked nori on a small rock secured with a rubber band and place it near where the kile is hiding. Keep the yellow occupied with garlic soaked food on the other end of your tank. Keep the lights off except for feeding.
If it will still not eat you have to consider a dip (like Dipex), a freshwater dip or a QT with Greenex or Tetra Medica Marin OOmed.
Good Luck

Hello,

Ick in a reef...another way to solve this problem is remove the infected fishes and treat in a seperate tank. Copper sulphate is fairly effective for fishes -- no good for reef. To treat the reef, you must remove all fishes from the reef for at least 4 to 8 weeks. Don't need to add any chemicals -- just leave it the way it is. Since there will be no host for the ick to grow, eventually they will die.

Garlic soaked food method works as long as it is a mild case and the fish are still eating.

Does anybody understands why garlic causes the ick to not attach to the fish ? I haven't heard of an explaination about how it actually works.

Copper sulphate can be purchased from J&L for $5.

Here's why Garlic works: http://www.reefs.org/library/article...tes-jorge.html

As for removing the fish: I don't have a large enough QT to try and put all the fish in there. It doesn't just help to remove some of the fish.
I'm am thinking of trying to removing the Kole which isn't eating and treating with copper... maybe. if the garlic doesn't work. (I still think he might picks the food of the rocks and sand)

p/s I haven't seen one of my gobies today, she stayed in his grotto. I hope she's ok... praying..

Hello FlameAngel,

Thanks for the article.

From my understanding, the garlic treatment prevents Ick from attaching to the fish and their gills. So, all the fish on the garlic treatment should be okay -- after 2 weeks of garlic food. Since the ick can't attach to the garlic laced fish, the ick has no home and it will eventually die.

As long as all the fishes in your reef are on garlic, and the ones that are not are in a seperate copper QT, then it should be fine. Once the fishes in the QT are well, feed them garlic food too. The garlic food can be used as a preventative maintenance.

FlameAngel,

How did you make out with your ick problem? Looks like the Powder Blue Tang I picked up at J&L this weekend has some. Got any words of advice. QT tanks in out of the question since I just gave away my old stand and the new one is far from complete.

Sorry to hear Flame,
I dont know the extent of your problem but believe it or not,the most effective solution that ive found is to leave it alone.

I just provided the best possible conditions and diet, and it has always dissappeared, usually after two or three full cycles of the parasite.

I would not want to steer you in the wrong direction Flame, but this has worked on several bouts with ick for me over the last few years....and for me the most sucsessful treatment has been no treatment at all.

This has always been for a reef tank tho,so im unsure of the consequences of doing that in a F/O.

Hey Marc,

Take a peek at when this thread started..
I was about to post for Flame too..

Lee,

Nice to see ya here.. The powder is having hard times huh? Garlic is something that people says works.. but it doesn't get rid of the ick or kill it IMO. It is in your tank. And will be for a while..

All you can do is hope the fella gets a bit more relaxed and likes his new home. The less stress the better.. Feed him well soak the nori you have with selcon and give it as much as he wants.. the more of a good diet the better.

Jamie,

My current tank Approx 120 gal, 6'x2'x18"(lxw'h) Been running for 6 weeks, since I moved everyone from my old 33G.

Darren,

I'm not even at home, just hearing about this over the phone from my fiance. Lost my Kole tang and my old yellow clown gobie in the past few days. One of my 402 powerheads sucked both of them in the intake. I had a screen filter on it in the old 33G, but must have forgoten to put it back on after the move. I have lost more fish to that powerhead than anything else.

Powder Blue is eating and I have made a large cave for him to relax in. He is now the Alpha and my FlameAngle is not hassleing him.
Will use the Selcon and the green Nori he likes, he also likes frozen brine shrimp and myssis too. Should I add the Selcon to that too, or is Nori enough?

lee the only time I have ever lost fish to powerheads are when the fish is already sick and to be honist its a lot easier to pull him off a powerhead then find him in the rock work

Well as a FINAL reponse to this topic:
the garlic was working well.. but it seems oodinium took for the tank, and within 2 days my whole stock died.

I'll be better next time with compatibility
Getting new fish in December

Thanks

Jamie,
I actualy watched a Dotyback that I had get chased up into the powerhead once in my old 33gallon tank. If I didn't know better my I would think my smart FlameAngle is back to his old tricks. 2 402 powerheads are out of the tank until I get home and can put proper screens on them.

Yes, Goodluck Flame...

Lee,

Sorry to hear about the Kole.. You can add selcon to any food you give them.. take the frozen stuff out, put it into a dish and let it thaw with some selcon on it. Do remember that you are adding more organics to your tank with the selcon.. Heck you could even put it on flakes if you wanted.. As well it can be added directly to the tank. It gives directions for that.. that is up to you tho.

Hope things get better.

Where are you now?

And good plan on the powerheads.. You can use the extra screens(round ones) you get with a Maxijet on your hagen 402's. FYI..
