Bleaching acros

Well over night my 3 favorite acros bleached the only thing ive done is add small amounts of baking soda ever two days to bring my alk up. What can i do?

muck 06-14-2005 10:46 PM

Just bleached or did they RTN?

Tarolisol 06-15-2005 12:03 AM

Ok well not i need to know the difference. Could you explain to me what happens in each situation.

mr_alberta 06-15-2005 12:06 AM

In bleaching, the coral loses it zoanthelle, in RTN, the tissue actually comes off of the skeleton. Bleaching can be fatal but isn't always, but RTN is fatal 100% of the time (assuming the whole colony RTN's). Also, it seems that RTN can spread to other corals as well.

Well im not sure what it did then, all i can tell is its white now and wasnt the other day, are there any sure signs of RTN.

Aquattro 06-15-2005 12:53 AM

Sean, pull one out and smell it. If it doesn't smell like acro, it lost it's tissue. If it stinks. it's bleached and can come back.

IMHO one of the triggers for RTN or STN is alkalinity that gets out of whack. I have experienced this many times when the alkalinty rises or drops unexpectantly.

Tarolisol 06-15-2005 02:03 AM

Ok ill give it the smell test tonight. I hope it stinks

Tarolisol 06-15-2005 06:54 AM

Well i havent had a chance to smell the coral yet but one of the acros has color in a few of its branches still, does this mean anything?

mr_alberta 06-15-2005 02:08 PM

Did it start losing color from the bottom up or the top down? RTN is usually a bottom up kinda ailment.

Tarolisol 06-15-2005 05:23 PM

I never really got to see. On one coral it looks like bottom up on the other it kinda faded away brown the white.

Jack 06-15-2005 07:31 PM

How much did your alkalinity shoot up?

Tarolisol 06-15-2005 08:18 PM

Not much maybe 1dkh if that.
