Aquariumgirl's Nano (not just a reefing thread!!)
Hey CanReefers, I'm planning on setting up a five gallon nano. Does anyone have any recommondations for inverts and fish for this tank (Possibly something different then what I have in my pico)? I will also be putting in an AquaClear 300 or 500 with a small skimmer.
|
I absolutely love sexy shrimp.. A nano of that size would be ideal for viewing them, too.
If you're going for a sand bed, nassarius snails will be sure to show up well despite their small size and it's always fun to watch them pop up during feeding time. Fishwise there aren't many fish I'm comfortable putting in a tank that small. Clown gobies are about the only fish that seem like a good idea to me. I'm half tempted to try a clown in anemones in my nano (it's 5G as well) but if she doesn't host then that's not much room to pace back and forth. |
Hey Rikko, I'll definitely have sexy shrimp in the five gallon (I also have them in my pico tank too, they are fun to watch  ). I was also thinking of a blue legged hermit crab, what do you think of them in a small tank? Do you have a picture of your tank, I'd like to see what other invertebrates such as corals, polyps and so on?
|
Blue legged hermit crabs are fun to watch. I personally always like to watch cleaner shrimp though, especially if you have two. You'll end up with larvae in the rock etc and they are inturn wonderful food for your corals. I'm not sure why you'd put a skimmer on a 5 Gallon tank though but hey, we all do things different don't we.

The tank itself is pretty new, so not much in there yet. My stocklist changes daily with plans and opportunities. :D
At the moment I just have a couple of orphaned bubble-tip anemones, so I'm going to have to see how mobile they are before I chance adding any corals. I'm getting a new camera delivered in the next few days so I'll snap a bunch of pics then. I think hermits would be fine - I just wouldn't add them because I have an intense distrust of all crabs. I have a single Marshall Island blue leg hermit in my 65 that I watch very closely and fortunately my bicolor blenny keeps him in line. Coralwise I would probably suggest something small, so that your small tank encourages you to see the details. Corals like small zoos and candy canes or hammers have interesting details when you watch them very closely.. I always feel like you don't "see" them as much in a huge tank. |
Thanks for the reply rikko and BCOG! and the advice. Right now I'm still putting a few things together, getting ready to start the nano. I'm thinking of getting a very small frogspawn, some zoos, a small pineapple brain, mushrooms, cloves and I think that is all on my list of corals. What do you think of this? I've put 2 20watt CF.
I had a candy cane but my sexy shrimp kept munching on it  I brought him back to recouperate! However, I was thinking of putting a yellowhead jawfish and a fire goby |
Corals sound fine! Frogspawns can expand pretty huge so be sure to give it a wide berth from all the others - wouldn't want 'em stinging one another.
I think both of those fish are out.. The firefish would be pretty cramped in there (they're around 3-4" adult and while they aren't big continuous swimmers, a 5G wouldn't afford him much). The jawfish should really have a deeper sand bed as well to burrow into - some appear to use caves but all the literature always insists on 4" of sand (shrug). Beyond that, both of those fish are notorious jumpers so unless you had the top absolutely bulletproof, you'd probably find one on the floor before too long. |
Thanks Rikko, do you have any recommondations for fish that I could put in the tank? I would like to have at least one fish that will swim around in the open.
|
There are some small dottyback species that might be alright, but they do tend to pick on crustaceans.
The only other fish I can really think of that might be out a little more would be a smaller blenny species - but even they would probably have to get moved out after some time. Maybe not a huge deal though - if you can find a tiny bicolour blenny (hands down my favourite marine fish) you could probably have him several months before he starts getting to a size where you'd want to find him a bigger home. Then you could start again or find another species (like so many people do with goldfish). |
Thanks Rikko!
Here are some pictures of the five gallon, I think I'll fill it tomorrow, yahoo!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Nano-Day-1.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ano-Day-1a.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ano-Day-1b.jpg |
Hey have you decided on what fish you are going to put in the 5 galon?
I just moved my 2.5g to a 5.5, I am planing on 2 pepermint shrimp this weekend, and a small fish in the near future. #1 on my list is the Neon blue goby. I was just reading your other thread, I was just in Safari Pets, last week. Love the store, and the live rock. Cant find any thing that has that much color and life on it out here in Calgary. I acctualy brought some back with me when I was out in February. |
hey luke, I'm sort of jumping around between fish at the moment. Right now I think I might go with some yellow and brown gobies and maybe one or two mollies (dalmations), just for something different
So you were at the store, that's great!! I'm glad you like it, we all try to do are best working hard. I think I remember you in February actually  I double bagged your live rock and gave you some extra bags too. |
Yup that was me,
The rock made it home safe and sound, and looks great in the tank. We are hoping to be out on the island some time in August, this time maybe for good. Keep up the great work. L |
i dunno how well a jawfish would do in such a small tank, i was scared to put him in my 20g, but here is an awesome site, it shows what size tank the fish needs to have at minimum, and it has a specific area for nano tanks... check it out!
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/s...fm?pCatId=2124 good luck and keep us posted! eva |
Here is another updated picture of the nano. I liked the sand so I decided to go with that. Everything is looking good, I've also put sand in the AC.
Thanks for the great link Eva!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Nano-Day-2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ano-Day-2a.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...ano-Day-2b.jpg |
no prob, that site helped me decide alot!
good luck! |
Lookin' good, AG.
You are obviously exercising the first rule in reefkeeping. Patience! Can't wait to see the rest. I've finally got around to posting a few pics in DIY. More pics to come later this week. Still busy with the new sump set up. Cheers, |
Thanks Mark, I'll be keeping a look out for your pictures.
I just got some live rock, some really nice looking live rock  This picture doesn't do this tank justice, it's a lot brighter then it looks, but the camara keeps adjust the brightness of the picture. I'll have to work on my camara skills  http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Nano-Day-3.jpg |
oh and here is a updated picture (after moving rock around three times until I was happy  hehe) this is with the moon light.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Nano-Day-4.jpg |
oh no!! Erik and noticed some cracks on the front of the aquarium, then we heard a crack
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Nano-Day-6.jpg |
What happened! Did a piece of rock fall over?
|
no, I think it had a small crack in the acrylic when I first set it up and it was slowly getting bigger  Ah well, I guess this means it's time for a bigger aquarium, hehe
I tried to relieve some of the pressure of the filter by putting stuff under it and putting foam behind the filter and the wall, maybe it wasn't enough. |

alrighty  here is the new tank (thanks Japarto!!) it's a ten gallon. it looks like I need more live rock too. the water hasn't settled yet so it still looks a little cloudy.

Looks like your getting the "Select" rock!
|
Haha, maybe  Ive rearranged the rocks in the tank, but "bummer" one of the lights went kaput. So, I'll have to get another bulb tomorrow.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...Nano2-Day4.jpg Oh, and if you look closely you can see the hairy mushrooms I just put in there, annnnd if you have laser vision you can see the pistol shrimp hidding under a rock (I guess I don't have the laser vision cause I can't see him  ) There is two sexy shrimp too. |
|
Looking very good aquarium girl.
I cant wait to see what the tank is going to look like when it's full. If the pico is anything to judge by. |
  Crabaris says: Nano not good!
Look nice anyway! Crabaris angry and hungry, go find dead fish now!  |
umm, thanks crabaris, I think  enjoy your dead fish
|
Whats next?
I think you need an open brain. Any further pics? |
Here is a picture with the protein skimmer. Having it on the side of the tank is temporary, I would like to put it on the back of the AC 110. Hopefully I get my stand by time I get back from my trip.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...o2-skimmer.jpg And just for fun, here is a few pictures of my other pets. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...nd-Blossom.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...irl/Tivvy3.jpg |
nice tank. i like your aquascaping. is that a crstal galexy coral in your tank? it looks really cool under the moon light.
|
I have an ac110 (500) and a Remora skimmer. I to had the problem of where to put the skimmer. It would have been perfect on the side of the tank , like yours, but them my coralife light wouldnt fit as it runs the full length of the 10gal.
While starting this reply I thought I may have solved the issue of light interferance, moving the fixtures legs all the way over on one end and letting the other end of the fixture overhang the side of the tank. Thought it was a good idea but also did not work. For now I have decided to run skimmerless, and I am selling the remora. http://www.canreef.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=17728 (shameless plug) As for your idea of hanging the skimmer off of the AC110, I would be a little nervous about that. First off, the AC110 (set up as a refugium) with live rock, sand and water weighs probably around 15lbs+ add on the weight of the skimmer full of water, and you know have alot of weight hanging off of the back of your tank. If the entire tank doesnt tip backward, then you run the risk of all that stuff putting pressure on that back glass pane. Which could cause it to crack or burst. You would have to at least build a mini stand for both the skimmer and AC110. This however could be as simple as a few books or a couple chucks of 2x4 spruce. Good luck. |
Thanks for the reply and info outtafocus, I was thinking about the problems I'll be facing with hanging the skimmer off of the filter. I will definitly have to build a mini stand for the filter and skimmer. When I get it all done (all I need is my stand which I hope to get tomorrow, HOPEFULLY!!) I'll post pics for everyone to see, hehe  . Hope it all works out
Manny, those are a bunch of hairy mushrooms, maybe if I'm good I'll get a galaxy!! |
Well here it is!! not quite finished. I still have to make a mini stand for the AC and skimmer, right now they are sitting on tin cans inside a box and books. And my new (well used-new) stand and a few other pictures.
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...th-skimmer.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...-skimmer-2.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...with-Stand.jpg Here is a picture of a snail I had in the pico tank. He was so small when I got him maybe only 5mm, now he is close to half an inch long!! http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...girl/Snail.jpg And here is the green mushroom I had in the pico, as you can see it was covering some of the mushrooms and zoos before I transfered it. And an updated picture of the hairy mushroom. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...om-in-Pico.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...enMushroom.jpg http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...yMushrooms.jpg Now I have a question for all of you, here is a very poor picture of a coral I found growing on one of the live rock, do any of you know what it is?? http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y23...nown-coral.jpg |
Here is a slightly better picture with a big red circle around the unknow coral.
