Ocean aquatics has lost Jack

I'm sorry that this is my first post, but I went to J&L yesterday and I saw Jack working there now. He was happy in his new job, J&L is a great place but I noticed there was some discomfort when we talked about Ocean Aquatics. He didn't say anything outloud of course, but anyone could've seen his disappointment on his face. In my opinion, he was the reason OA was so great. I don't want to get in to the politics of it, but I feel Jack got shafted after James 'bought' into OA. I'll definately rethink where I shop even if I have to drive all the way to J&L everytime I want something.

Anyone else have some insight?

this is probably a sensitive subject for anyone who has ever shopped at OA or had the pleasure of meeting and talking with jack. this probably isn’t the right place to talk about this, its unfortunate that it happened but it's done now and time for everyone to move on.

Jason McK 03-18-2005 05:02 PM

I was also sad to see Jack leave OA. But regardless of the reasons it may not be the best topic to discuss in a public forum. It can not be good for Jack or for OA to have there Business decisions talked about on Canreef. JMO.

Very true indeed. Sorry for bringing it up so abruptly. I get a little hot under the collar when I think about it. Many apologies if it was too direct. I guess one must be politically correct to avoid politics.

Welcome from Burnaby. We're neighbours  If you're ever in the Metrotown area, I'm just 3 min. away. Just pm me with your contact info if you want to come over & shoot the breeze about this addiction. (my schedules nuts but I mostly work at home)

My first experience with OA was with Wendell, and I got what has become a trademark for them....good service. This was before Jack. When Jack started there, he only brought increased service, and assisted Wendell with achieving the goals of the business.
I'm sure Jack will add that level of service to J&L for as long as he's there. I know OA will continue to provide the level of service Jack left behind.
James is also a huge contributor to this hobby, and I see the level of service getting even better, with James having experience managing other successful shops in his past. I know some of the best posts this board has ever had posted have come from James.
If OA's plans and Jack's plans didn't follow the same path, fine. They will both do well in the future regardless. All the people involved are highly dedicated to the hobby, and I'm sure will do what's best for them individually and as contributing hobbyists involved in the retail end of the business.
I wish all of them the best for the future.

Thanks guys!!

Well said.

Good one Brad.

Sounds like a win win situation for consumers.

Allthough it might be sad to see the tallent leave one place to go to another, you can bet that the exellence that that person demonstrates has rubbed off on others and will make the LFS industry better as a whole.

It would be nice to see these kind of people getting scooped up (At a decent sallary of course.) by some of the LFS that have nothing but uninvolved employees.

Just my opinion though.

And before I forget jws444, welcome to Canreef!

May I say that I am more then a little confused here. Everyone is dropping first names as though we are all supposed to know who we are talking about. I am sure I know Jack, as I had the pleasure of meeting him at one of the Calgary meets. I am wondering if James is the chap who used to manage AI in Edmonton (aka Van down by the river), whom I also had the pleasure of meeting at an Edmonton meet I attended.

Job posting

Hey Brad
you should run for the next MP election. So very politically correct and diplomatic and nevertheless, very well addressed.

Um, let's see......no.

Seriously, with the shift described in this thread, everyone will come out ahead. OA, Jack, J&L and the consumer!! Keep in mind, even when change is good, it's not always easy to adjust right away. Let's bring this thread back in 6 months, we can assess it again.

There he goes again. Brad! Brad! Brad! Where do I pick up my pin?

BCOrchidGuy 03-20-2005 04:11 AM

Last time I was in the area Jack lived just a stones throw from J&L, that may have been a factor in any decisions he had to make.
