I must be crazy to do this but.............. I am doing it.
Am I crazy to backup my aquarium magazine collection? 597 mags and growing.

no matter what they say about you on the other thread....have fun! and while you are doing it if you find any really interesting info, you could email it to me...you know when you have spare time that is!!!
|
wow 17 thousand posts! dang!
thats a lot of scans, wow. i mean wow! it would be a great resource when done. maybe if you split them up we could all scan some and when done we could build a local resource site so we could all download the mags? put me down for 3 scans  |
What you need is a scanner with an auto feeder...
|
when done burn it all to CD...not just to protect your time and effort but also offer copies to people (for a fee) to recoop some of the bucks you originally spent on those mags. (again not to mention the time) As Willow said it would be a great resource when done!
|
I would only back up the articles that you think are worth keeping, most mags only have 1 good article in them and the rest is ok. or repetitious.

I like Steve's idea myself, except instead of scanning them I would simply cut out the 1 or 2 worthy articles out of each mag, then just get a few 3-ring binders a hole punch and archive them that way
Goodluck! |
My two cents would be...
Don't scan the real old ones, as reefkeeping technology has increased ten fold over the years. All you old hats, think back to when you first started reef keeping and the equipment that was used back then. I'm fairly sure you would shake your head at using some of that equip now on your tanks. On the flipside. It would also be cool to document the changes and mentalities of reefkeeping throughout the years. Rob |
420/609 (68.97%) done.

Why not get people to help you? I mean you work hard to copy these yes. But think of the money you have spent of them. Burn them to disk you could sell the disks for 10 bucks/set. If people help you scan give it to them for free. Be quicker and easier right. jmo

Of course reselling unauthorized duplications of copyrighted materials..... Ahem. Just don't leave a paper trail or sell 'em online. :D
1/2 hr a mag? Are you scanning at too high a dpi? I OCRed a full book once and it took praps 3 hours for a 700 page paperback. |

Maybe you could just write to the magazine company and ask them to mail you their files in PDF... It would take them mere moments...

I don't know if I'm more impressed by the scanning effort, or the fact that you have almost 23000 posts at that other forum you first linked to. And the fact that you only had 17000 at the beginning of this thread.
Dang man, that's a lot of posts. 9 posts per day for 7 years I guess.. That's just a lot of posts, wow. Did I mention .. I think that is a lot of posts? I mean holy crap man! That's a lot of posts! |
and 6,161 posts is no slouch.
|
What format did you scan them into? If you PDF'd them, there is a way to create a searchable index of them. Let me know if you want more info on it.

Ok, ok, are you done yet? I've been following this thred for since the begining of it.
I'm curious though, is there a way to search out any particular type of article. For example, if I wanted to do research on clams, is there a way to bring up all of the clam articles? |
Sure. If you go through them all and index them first.
