underwater camera suggestion
What's the best camera for taking video or pictures underwater? I'll be going on a snorkelling trip. My current one doesn't show the colours very well
|
GoPro works well. You can get orange filter or just adjust the WB in post. Its better to adjust the WB in post as you'll lost some sharpness using filters. I had fun snorkeling with it on my last trip last summer in Coron, Philippines.
Enjoy your trip brotha. |
@Crimper is right, GoPro action camera works well under the water but it really depends on the feature of the camera or rather should I say the specs.
|
Thanks! I'll pick one up tomorrow

I don't like GoPro for pics because the screen is soooo tiny it's difficult to see if you're taking any decent photos until you upload them. I got very few good pictures off GoPro during a Philippines trip. Rather disappointing.
For snorkeling I much prefer my Pentax WG-II and it's half the price of a GoPro. Waterproof to 40 feet. You'll need a red/orange filter on whichever option you choose. |
Look into an Olympus TG-4

I'll second the Olympus TG-4 or even the TG-870.
Nice large screen with a clear image so you can actually see what your taken a picture of. |

I'd recommmend the Olympus tough series cameras as well. The TG-4 takes amazing close up pics also from as little as 1cm away, it has some quirks though. I kinda prefer using a TG-820 instead which saves camera settings for the next time you turn it on, and the lense position in the corner of the camera makes it a bit easier to take coral pics with out the camera blocking the lighting, and it's quite a bit cheaper if you find them. They 820 has its disadvantages too, it has a moving lense cover which can get sticky/sandy, a few extra metal pieces which can corrode if one isn't really diligent in freshwater rinses right away.
Custom white balance settings with both is awesome, no need for filters or post processing once you get it dialled in. |
great. Thanks for the suggestions. I currently have Fuji finepix and it takes crappy pictures.
|
Anyone have experience with the TG-850?
|
Olympus TG-4 here, loved it when I had water to take pictures under :) Great close ups too.

Nice pics Mandosh!!! Do you have any more reef scene pics? That's where a good camera shines. The one you posted looks great! Are you using an Ikelite housing?
