Quietest protein skimmer
 

Hello,

Having a hard time sleeping because my protein skimmer is so loud. Wondering if anyone knows what the quietest hang on back protein skimmer is for a 30g tank?

My Bubble Kings have been damn near silent. At least as silent as something that makes bubbles on purpose.

I have a SeaClone Protein Skimmer. I only have about 1.5 inch of opening between my glass lid and the rim of the tank for the pipes to go into the tank. Kind of limits the options :cry:

Seaclones are on the low end of the skimmer hierarchy and are known to be very loud and inefficient. I used to sleep right beside my old 20 gallon tank which ran AquaC Remora and I could barely hear it. They are cheap and old but works great. You can also look into aquamaxx HOB-1. Not sure about reef octopus though.

Weird part is skimmer sound is so relative that one skimmer that appears silent to one may be like a vacuum cleaner to someone else.

Aquamaxx cone s and jns skimmers using sicce shark pump are really silent. I believe they make hang on models.

do you need to skim full time? You could always employ a timer to turn off the skimmer when it's beddy time?

Thanks for all the help, I am looking into all of these skimmers, some are harder to find then others in Canada. As for the putting it on a timer, I've heard it takes skimmers a few days to set in and if you keep turning it on and off, it never gets to its optimal state?

Seaclone isn't going to do much anyway, invest in a better skimmer.

I find the sound my Red Sea PRIZM Deluxe Protein Skimmer makes so soothing it puts me to sleep!

I think that most reefers have their protein skimmer shut off during feeding, so I don't think that it should effect the break in cycle.

That's a good poll question. I think you'd be surprised with the answer.

Aquamaxx HOB-1. Just hear a quiet air sound.

My IceCap K2-200 is very quiet. The Sicce pump is much quieter than the Tunze Hydrofoamer I was using before, there is no splashing, and high quality components prevent vibration. Just hear a little whistle from the venturi.

Is that Seaclone a needle wheel? Anything that chops the water to produce bubbles is going to make some noise, cost has nothing to do with that. In my experience, the most quiet way to produce the finest bubbles remains the old school wooden air diffuser run by an air pump. I reverted to this technology (diy skimmer came with my tank) after trying a Remora C for a while. That Remora was the noisiest thing in the entire house! And it didn't skim very well either, then the intake pipe broke when it was moving it... my experience, so I went back to old wooden air diffuser unit. Modified it to improve performance, larger air pump running more air diffusers, but still using the old body of the skimmer. More noise now with the big air pump, but I'm skimming a 77 gallon, your 30 would be fine with a smaller air pump running one good air diffuser.

I've upgraded to this beast as an air pump to run multiple air diffusers, so yeah, more noise now than with the little Stellar W-60 unit in the first photo.

... before you go spending big $$$s on the latest/greatest, why not look into trying to mod the Seaclone if that's feasible? For a few bucks invested in a wooden air diffuser & air pump, you may be able to convert that cheapo Seaclone into something that works just fine with your 30 and all you will hear is the hum of a small air pump.
