Anyone made there own tank?

I was just wondering if anyone has and is it a good idea?

richtg 10-14-2004 06:23 AM

DIY tank

I considered it for a while, but as I remember pricing out the glass from various outlets, it was almost the same price as a pre-made tank such as one from Bow Valley Aquarium.
P.S. Once upon a time, I had a F.W. 33gal tank let go (@ 3 a.m. and I was @ my girlfriends house!!) It was lucky someone was home to relay the news to me. I only had to replace about 25 sq. feet of the ceiling below...

Tarolisol 10-14-2004 06:37 AM

I figured it might be expesive and probly not well secured. but im dredding carrying a 230 gallon tank up one flight of stairs and down another.

Eposer has made several tanks, large and small. He would probably be one of the more experienced on this board.

I have wondered in the past if Bow Valley Aquarium/Inter-American would be willing to build a tank in place... ie. right in your basement.

Canadian Man 10-14-2004 06:44 AM

They would Quinn, They charge you for it though
Tony know's the answer to that one.

If you build a tank in the place where it will reside, what happens if you want to move? I know a guy who had a pool table built in his basement that can't be removed now as it is too big. They would have to higher a pro pool tabel builder to disassemble it should they ever move.

You leave it behind. Or you get a whole buncha Canreefer's to help you on the day of the move. Buccaneer Steve should know!

If you do a search, you will find some of Evan's (eposer's) work. Also Steve (Buk_A_neer) built his own tank. I think there are a couple of others on this board who have done it as well, but I'm only on one cup of coffee so far this morning and I don't remember.

Heck, here are some threads to get ya started ....

You think any of these guys are interested in building another tank  . Or do they just build for them selves.

Buccaneer 10-14-2004 11:21 PM

If you tell me what it is you want I can help you source out the parts and when you have everything we can assemble it

EDIT : ... you might have to " volunteer " ... to help move some rock/coral/fish in about a week though as payment

Tarolisol 10-15-2004 12:40 AM

You are so awsome. I will help you do anything you need. I PM'd you. Just tell me where and when and ill bring buckets.

Quinn 10-15-2004 01:33 AM

Steve I wasn't aware you built your tank?

You should take some photos before you tear everything down. Partly for us, partly so you know how to put it back together.

Buccaneer 10-15-2004 02:45 AM

@ Tarolisol ... check your PM's

@ Quinn ... that tank in my basement is wood/fiberglass so no easy disassembly I am afraid ... the new owner of my house might buy it ( without livestock ) ... will find out in the next couple days.

I just built a all glass 220G for my boss though  ... just putting the eurobrace on it tomorrow

And when we get settled into the new house I am going over the deep-end ( literally ) ... I will build a 96 L X 60 D X 34 H ... 847G ! ( wood/fiberglass/starfire front )  ... will have it done by January I hope ( Frag swap at my place again in February  ) ... The fish room will have its own dehumidification.

basically the same reef setup I have now but with 36" of swimming space in the front for the fishies

Now I know where my clown tang and Naso are going when they get too big

Tarolisol 10-15-2004 04:23 PM

Has anyone else done a wood and plexiglass tank. It seems interesting i wonder what the cost difference would be. For an inwall set up it seems like a good idea.
