Mother of all Rock/Sand/Salt Orders

Hey Everybody

Couple people know about this, and i finally have a tentative date set, so time to see how many we can get in on this.

The wife and i are heading to Invermere for a week right after thanksgiving, then going to swing through vancouver with a little stop at J&L. We're looking at picking up the morning of oct 19th or 20th then dead heading back to edmonton. Depending on how much we get in on this, we either have a yukon to fill, or a 3/4 ton truck.

So, anybody that needs live rock, buckets of salt, or bags of substrate, anything thats too heavy to ship, nows the time to go for it.

Lets see how low we can get the price on rock down to.

we'll have the date set for the stay in invermere tomorrow, then ill contact J&L and see when they're getting anymore rock in and we can start putting holds on it.

have fun everybody

Josh

Hi Josh,

Would you be able to get 2x160G buckets of I/O salt for me? Thanks.

-Harvey

Richer 09-23-2004 04:38 AM

Would be great if you could pick up one 160g bucket of I/O for me. If you want advance payment (I'd prefer if you did), please PM me.

Thanks!
-Rich

ill call over and get a group order going under my name at J&L as soon as i can confirm our vacation spot morrow.

then anybody that wants anything can just call over, mention my name, give their list and pay for their part, then ill just haul it back. get receipts when i load and know who gets what at pickup. think this would be the easiest way

and for anybody thats curious, im located by the home depot/superstore on 127th street and 137th avenue

bulletsworld 09-23-2004 04:07 PM

Hi Josh,

I pm'd you.

mr_alberta 09-23-2004 11:23 PM

Hi,

How much live rock are you guys picking up? I may be interested in a small amount if the price goes down to $3.99/lb!

Thanks.

Beverly 09-24-2004 03:47 PM

Josh,

Have you called J&L yet to set up the group order? We have a few things we'd like to order

Be aware that the chance of J&L having 8+ boxes of rock in stock will be slim to none. Most of their large rock orders have always been "pre-order". And they do usually sell out. Check by phone before you make any large rock purchasing plans.

Hi Josh,

PM'ed you.

John

BlkWolfe 09-24-2004 07:22 PM

Just got off the phone with them

Anybody that wants in, give J&L a call, ask for Jeff, tell him your in on the order being picked up by Josh Edwards, give them your list, and they'll take down your info. They've got a note under my account so there shouldnt be any problems.

This includes everybody that has contacted me up to this point. Still need you to call J&L and give them your order yourselves. Just leave a note in the thread here so i know about how much im bringing back

if something should come up, feel free to call me or have J&L call me for any details, 780-953-5311.

Cutoff for Live Rock for this order im picking up is Monday, October 4th. So anybody wants anything you gotta call them and reserve/pay/whatever by then.

I'm in for about 160-200lbs of Fiji. I think Jess wanted about 60lbs. And i might need rubbermaids or coolers for hauling peoples rock back. Can keep the rock submerged and warm for the ride home and preserve some of that life on it, just dont want to soak the upholstry in the yukon if we're takin that one

And one last little note, our personal vacation to invermere is off. Aliens must have visited my house the last couple nights and got a few fish in the mood. Got a few spawns to look after now so we wont be disappearing for a week. 3 days to vancouver wont be a problem, got a brother to come and change water

this means the date is a little more flexible, maybe do pickup on the 22nd so everybody has friday night/saturday free to come and grab their stuff.

Hows this for everybody?

jess128 09-25-2004 05:29 AM

Hi Josh, I'm still interested in 50 or 60 lbs. I'll phone J&L tomorrow and let them know. Let me know if you want me to get some rubbermaids for you, I'm going to wal-mart tomorrow to get some anyway so it wouldn't be a problem at all.

-Jess

BlkWolfe 09-25-2004 07:17 AM

Sounds Good

Keep in mind for anybody ordering rock, we're not really limited to ordering "by the box". Can order 50lbs or 80lbs and not go by multiples of 65 since its all being lumped together for weight at pickup.

Prices are...
0-65lbs = 4.59lb
66-130lbs = 4.39lb
131-325lbs = 4.19lb
326-455lbs = 4.09lb
456+lbs = 3.99lb

So far everybody has us at 285lbs (325 if i up mine to 200). 1lb short of 4.09lb, no reason we cant get it down to that 3.99

Newguy, how much you in for

mr_alberta 09-25-2004 02:00 PM

Hi,

Sorry I haven't called JL yet. I'm still asking around to see if anyone wants anything and I'll get it all under my name. I think I'm down for at least 65lbs of Fiji rock (1 box) and a bunch of other stuff.

Thanks for doing all the leg work Josh. Kudos to you!

jess128 09-25-2004 03:56 PM

I just got off the phone with J&L, I'm down for 60lbs fiji. Jeff seemed kind of surprised, he said "oh, you want ANOTHER 60lbs?" The price must have dropped some more, I got 60lbs for only $220. Thanks for doing this Josh, it's really great.

mr_alberta 09-25-2004 11:31 PM

Just called and placed my order as well:

65lbs Fiji (1 box)
2x160G pails IO salt

THANKS JOSH http://members.shaw.ca/harvwong/bowdown.gif

BlkWolfe 09-25-2004 11:49 PM

Just got off the phone with Jeff

Jess, your 60lbs are going to end up at whatever our total weight puts us at per lb. He didnt know why the computer priced out $220 for a box, but as it stands we're all sitting 1lb short of 4.09lb

John & Harvey, got it, no problem bringing that back.

Lets keep the rock comin, only about 150lbs short of 3.99

Tell your friends about it, 9 more days til the cutoff

PS, still lots of room in the truck

jess128 09-26-2004 12:01 AM

Jeff just called me. He said my total will be $280 something. I'm a little confused about how things got messed up, he said something about the computer setting it to the sale price. I trust he knows what he's doing though. Hopefully the price gets a little lower, my mother will freak if she finds out this is costing me quite a bit more than $200! I don't have a problem with paying it though...

BlkWolfe 09-30-2004 08:06 AM

4 more days guys

keep the rock orders comin

mr_alberta 09-30-2004 02:52 PM

How many pounds are we sitting at now?

BlkWolfe 09-30-2004 07:21 PM

still 325 so right on the edge of 4.09

few people might be waiting to see the october special before they come in

fortheloveofcrabs 10-01-2004 12:56 AM

I added a few (very few) pounds last night to the order.

BlkWolfe 10-01-2004 05:59 AM

hmmm...

could always come back through calgary...

make a stop there for the night and unload some rock. see if we could get that extra bit to put us over 450lbs

any calgarians reading this thread interested?

EmilyB 10-01-2004 06:03 AM

I could probably do some...check with AJ_77 he was looking. Maybe you should post in the Calgary forum. If we can make it worthwhile you coming thru here.

Cap'n 10-01-2004 06:04 AM

When would you be showing up in Calgary if you decide on this route?

BlkWolfe 10-01-2004 06:53 AM

i might be pushing back the trip by a week, just to allow some of our fry to grow out a bit more and move them to the big tanks before we disappear for a few days.

anybody have a problem with pickups in calgary the evening of the 30th and pickups in edmonton the afternoon of the 31st? or calgary on the 29th and edmonton on the 30th?

and a question for the more experienced reefers...how would the life on the live rock stand up to these colder temps in a truck bed? the order is getting big enough that we're lookin at taking the big truck and hauling the rock in the open bed.

PS...i need to clear up a couple things before we commit to the extra rock/detour through calgary. hopefully ill know by tomorrow

thanks everybody

mr_alberta 10-01-2004 01:44 PM

Cold temp + live rock = base rock....

Skimmerking 10-01-2004 01:53 PM

Ya , but dont foget about the rock when they fly it out from the lsalsnds in the winter it goes thur customs and all the wait and the flying time in canada
will be supper cool under the plane.

BlkWolfe 10-01-2004 08:43 PM

Ran this by Jeff we both thought this would be the way to go...

Ive got alot of insulation leftover from insulating tanks and racks, got measurements of the rock boxes, so i think im going to end up just making an insulated casing for all the rock boxes in the bed of the truck. That plus heat packs should give us a couple days of warmth

enough people have commited i dont want to cancel this because of the cold

Also, pickup has been moved to the morning of the 29th/30th. depending if friday night or saturday night is a better day for the folks in calgary to meet up with me somewhere and pickup the rock and anything else. We'll overnight in calgary then come into edmonton the afternoon the following day

With the date being moved back, cutoff for LR orders has been lifted. So we're free to keep adding rock orders for another week at least, until Jeff calls me and says no more.

off to the calgary forum

EmilyB 10-01-2004 08:49 PM

It can be -20 by Oct 30. A couple days and you'll have iceberg rock.

BlkWolfe 10-01-2004 08:51 PM

so we just want to call this all off then?

EmilyB 10-01-2004 08:52 PM

No, I just wondered if that happened, then what ?

EmilyB 10-01-2004 08:56 PM

I've got it ! Take both vehicles...

BlkWolfe 10-02-2004 12:51 AM

haha the gasser will burn more in gas than we're spending on rock :P

besides....its in the middle of being traded in for a newer diesel now anyway. supposed to be taking delivery within two weeks.

ill find a way to make this work. i dont want to cancel this because its getting cool. we need the rock for our setup and everybody else has put their bit in as well

can always borrow a topper for the truck and at least keep the rock boxes covered and outta the wind. soon as the new truck comes in im gonna put together that 6" thick insulated box for it in the bed and see how it holds heat overnight or on a trip out to tofield. also no reason we cant keep replenishing warm water every 4-6 hours. thats only one stop before calgary, and we're only doing this trip once

im going to hit canadian tire tomorrow and see if i can grab a couple 12v car heaters and just throw them in the big container with the rock. Should keep everything toasty if i can find what im looking for

everybody still up for this?

Dez 10-02-2004 04:57 AM

Or, here's another option that may be feasable. Des will part out his 180 gallon and sell all of his rock for five bucks a pound.

I have close to 400 pounds of rock, remember, this is tax included, no gst, no cold, no die off, fully seasoned and active for the last 2 years, no aiptasia, no mantis shrimp etc....

what do you think about this option?

des

jess128 10-02-2004 05:21 AM

I think we should stick to the original plan. Shipping in water is not an option, eh? Pick up on the 29/30 is fine for me, I'll come by the 30th though, I'm in school on the 29th. Hopefully this still goes through, I don't really see what the problem is... the insulation should work.

Hey damn I bought when it was at 6 bucks! Although it wasn't outta your 180gal. The people hear broke you down to sell did them. Beautiful 180gal too. Does that mean corals will be up for sale in that tank too!

:multi:

For purchasing rock and not needing alot more, I might just go this route (Des) as you can pick the pieces of rock you want & take it home the same day. With J&L order you never know what size pieces you'll get and although it may be a $1.00 or so cheaper, its like purchasing for something you never know what you get. Also with gas prices out there. Its quite the trip to go just for rock haul and who is going to be stiffed with the gas bill in the end, unless you chip in. Then how much do you save?

Just IMO though.

BlkWolfe 10-02-2004 07:37 PM

Heh, nobody is getting stuck with the fuel bill. This was a trip the wife and i had been wanting to take, as a vacation and to get supplies for our tank. For all i care as long as you pay for your portion of the order to J&L before pickup all you gotta do is come and grab it off the truck.

course i wouldnt turn down 10 bucks to the fuel fund, or maybe a frag  but i am in no way expecting something from everyone for this.

an extra 1000lbs of stuff on top of ours is hardly going to be noticed, for loading or for mileage

Dez, i had thought about some of your rock before, but i need a few buckets of salt and about 350lbs of aragonite as well. Between the shipping for the rock, 10 bucks difference per bag of aragonite, and whatever per pail, this saves us more than what diesel will cost for the trip
