Dam, I know this one .....

I think it's a Vrolik's if I'm remembering the one I was thinking of

gregzz4 03-26-2015 05:21 AM

Vrolik's Wrasse

:Halichoeres chrysotaenia, while appearing similar to Halichoeres melanurus, can be differentiated by its spotted caudal fin, whereas H. melanuras has lines on its caudal fin that form a single black spot when compressed:

BTW, great fish you got there
Not so common as far as I know

I checked live aquaria and google but none of the pictures really look like it.

Wheelman76 03-26-2015 06:07 AM

Maybe Dusky wrasse ? Where's Albert ? He will know.

TimT 03-26-2015 06:07 AM

Looks like a male Leopard Wrasse. Possibly Macropharyngodon ornatus

Check this article
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-07/hcs3/

gregzz4 03-26-2015 06:07 AM

Try google for pics
Try researching the Halichoeres line ....

Remember, not all pics will truly look like your specimen

Good luck !

OK, looks like I'm out to lunch then

Both the above apply too ... argh

I have much to learn
Sorry if I steered you wrong. I was focused on the melanurus theme

No problem. Thanks for the help. It does sort of look like an ornate leopard but I haven't a clue.

gregzz4 03-26-2015 06:19 AM

I've seen so many different pic of ornate leopards that I can't tell what's real and what's not
From what I can tell, ornates have a lot of red when they're young ...

gregzz4 03-26-2015 06:23 AM

The pic you posted shows a fish with a slender body, so I'm thinking hunter fish such as the ones I mentioned

Hopefully in a month or 3 it will fill out and show us what it really is

BTW, did I say good luck ?

That pic is from my tank. The wrasse is probably close to 4" long not sure if it will change much now.

albert_dao 03-26-2015 06:41 AM

It's not a Leopard Wrasse, it's a type of Halichoeres. I'll figure it out tomorrow if no one else does :)

mello 03-26-2015 06:45 AM

I'm convinced it is too, but I should have just gone to bed

Oceanic Corals

mello 03-26-2015 06:52 AM

Thanks

Wretch 03-26-2015 07:15 AM

Well my guess is Argus Wrasse (Halichoeres argus) now I give up and hope someone else knows. Thanks for the help all.

Albert it's not the typical Leopard wrasse that I am thinking of. It's this one.

Nope, not a Macropharyngodon. I sold the fish, I got a good look at its mouth.

* But I am willing to be wrong :P

Edit: I just remembered I have a DOA in the freezer... I might just dissect it to get a positive look at the mouth, cuz I'm gross like that <___<

"For Science"

Wretch 03-26-2015 03:02 PM

This is a picture of an argus wrasse someone on reef central thought it was a grey head wrasse? I am still confused.

Myka 03-26-2015 03:27 PM

Halichoeres argus, Peacock Wrasse.

EDIT: Oops, you beat me. It's not a grey Head Wrasse, I used to have a Grey Head Wrasse. I'll find a pic.

Wretch 03-26-2015 04:49 PM

Well there we go. Looks like we have our answer. Argus Wrasse. Now we wait for Albert to confirm. Thanks all.

Myka 03-27-2015 04:39 AM

Here's my old Grey Head Wrasse - best pic I ever got of him - he's fast!

Nice looking fish!

albert_dao 03-27-2015 12:08 PM

So I'd just like to point out that I did inspect the mouth parts of the frozen fish and it didn't have the pronounced throat teeth. As a matter of contrast, here's a Leopard Wrasse lil dude I just finished unloading about an hour ago:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-c-a.akamaihd.n...9d20d48cffd667

This guy DID have throat teeth :)

TimT 03-27-2015 03:53 PM

Interesting info Albert, thanks for the knowledge. :)

Was the fish red and blue or red and green? I could be suffering from the blue dress/gold dress syndrome. Lol.

Cheers,
Tim
