New saltwater

i'am using instant ocean reef crystal salt and a 6 stage ro unit and i get this brown algae on the side of the tub i'am mixing in when iam making new saltwater the powerhead gets it too, is this normal did it with my last h2o salt too that i was using

Myka 02-13-2015 02:37 PM

Yes, it's normal with those two salts. It's not algae, it's organic scum. Some people switch salt because of this, others don't care. I'm in the "don't care" category.

Ya, me too. I wipe out my bin every other water change.

i clean my mixing tank maybe once every 6 months. it's in a poorly lit area so my eyes can't see the brown film on the glass, heater and powerhead. i think this helps me go longer without feeling the need.

I noticed the brown film to the first time I used reef crystals. I was confused at first then after that I tried rolling my bun of salt first and never had the problem again
