clown fish tank

setting up a maroon clownfish tank.
33 gal tall for now.

going to run skimmerless for now. would a powerhead pointed atthe surface provide enough oxygen?

mark 01-18-2015 05:10 PM

are running a power filter in place of a skimmer as they'll provide aeration

reef-junkie 01-18-2015 05:19 PM

I do have a fluval 205 on the tank but I'm not sure how much aeration canister filters provide

reef-junkie 01-18-2015 05:29 PM

Tank is plumbed from the bottom so the return is completely submerged

mark 01-18-2015 05:43 PM

For power filter was thinking more like the Aquaclear hang on type where the water flows over a lip. A canister would provide some aeration just based on water movement but if me, I'd add the power head.

Myka 01-18-2015 05:56 PM

Do you plan to add any other fish? That's a bit tight quarters for a pair of Maroons unless they are on a broodstock system or something.

reef-junkie 01-18-2015 11:44 PM

I only plan on keeping the 2 fish plus a standard cuc of snails and hermits.

Myka 01-19-2015 12:31 AM

I think the combination of a small tank and using a canister filter will have you fighting nitrate. You just really like Maroon Clowns or you want to breed them?

reef-junkie 01-19-2015 12:53 AM

i actually just aquired a pair of lightning maroons. I plan on eventually trying to breed them.

reef-junkie 01-19-2015 12:54 AM

may eventually put in a sump and skimmer

George 01-19-2015 04:20 AM

Can you post a picture of your pair of "lightning maroons" please?

Here's a couple pics. I plan on uploading more once I get them in their tank. (Currently in a breeder box)

just to respond to your original question, i have a 33g skimmerless and sumpless tank with one powerhead. It is working for me so far (> 2 years).

George 01-19-2015 07:24 PM

Nice fish, not as nice as the F0 but still unusual pattern. Do you know what generation they are?

reef-junkie 01-19-2015 07:39 PM

not 100% sure what generation. they came from sea and reef. I anticipate that they will get alot nicer with age. Theyre both still very small at the moment

Wicked Fish

I have a Yellow Striped Maroon that I have in a 14g biocube which is all his! Absolutely will be upgrading for him (a selling point to the wife as to why I need a larger tank!) as he grows but for now he is happy and master of the tank...!
Love this Breed of Clownfish and THOSE ARE FRICKIN RAD MAN.

If this breeding thing you speak of goes well, I'll take a few from Ya!

Good luck

33 gal is a little small for a pair of clowns...
You will definitely want to keep up on water changes.

I would say a 5 gallon bucket every week or two should keep you on top of nitrates.

Skimmerless and sumpless, are you going to add a dsb or have a significant amount of LR?

reef-junkie 01-20-2015 02:35 AM

I have a 4-5" sand bed and a ton of LR. Approx 60+lbs in total. Plan on doing weekly water changes and I imagine I'll eventually get a skimmer down the road and dose regularly with nopox

Thanks, I'm pretty excited about it. Already started the pairing process. Definitely not the easiest thing but I have a lot of faith I'll be successful in the end
