I generally don't take July or August off I generally take a lot of time off during the winter months

WarDog 08-10-2014 07:35 PM

No vacation for us this year. Instead we decided to reno the back yard we got with the house.

It went from this,

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3851/...840e33a9_c.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5570/...503f7879_c.jpg

https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5560/...70c36e9a_c.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5562/...9a46d328_c.jpg

To this,

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3922/...5576cf68_c.jpg I thought about a pond, but there are too many raccoons and skunks around.

Proteus 08-10-2014 08:34 PM

Spent the better portion of my days off at the cabin.

NIVLEM09 08-11-2014 02:11 AM

Thx, I enjoy it too! Not often enough though, I've only had it out once this summer for some silly reason. It was a build project when I moved to Vernon years ago. Bob's Special is the design, originally by the Chestnut Canoe Company. I built it with plans from Bear Mountain Boats who tweaked the design for modern strip/glass/epoxy construction. Although a 15' boat on the plans, by adding 1 inch between each of the 12 mould stations when you build it, you end up with a 16' boat, which is what I decided to do. Plans say it's still a fair design with the extra foot. Now thinking I should build another, 15' this time, a few lbs. lighter when I need to pick it up & throw it on the truck.

The bead & cove cedar strips were ordered from an outfit in North Van. Clear, old growth wood from the coast, so I thought a Haida Raven inlay in the bow was appropriate. The remaining trim, inwales, outwales, thwart, seat etc. are cherry wood. Inlay uses various exotic woods I ordered from Lee Valley, where I also purchased the boat plans.

Flying into a remote lake for some 'fly fishin' is not a bad gig either.

Beautiful pictures.. And I'm so jealous of you all! I an not able to take my holidays in August asi usually do, as my office has big upgrades scheduled for two of my buildings. But I sure will be rubbing it in when I'm off the whole month of December sipping fortified hot cocoa in front of my fireplace and your all out shoveling

Dearth 08-11-2014 10:05 PM

I generally take my holidays when I don't have to compete in the rat race trying to get from point A to B I try to avoid July and August at the height of the rat race and take the calmer months like June, sept and March. Less stress and way more fun

tlhood 08-12-2014 02:48 PM

You guys all make me jealous. My summer has been spent in a cubicle =[

NIVLEM09 08-12-2014 05:39 PM

It's day two in Hawaii.just went to Waikiki beach yesterday, what do you guys recommend to visit in Honolulu?today's plan is to go whale watching and snorkelling.thanks

hunggi74 08-12-2014 07:53 PM

This summer has been a busy one.

Married my best friend of almost 10 years in July. Had 2 weeks off, but not at all relaxing...

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1d53be01.jpg

This was poor Tim.....we had a camping/outdoor wedding, complete with a pig roast and a bon fire later in the evening.

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...psab0c6838.jpg
I was off the first week of August as well, but that was a girls camping trip, husbands and kids only allowed on the weekends...lol. Was a great week off. Honeymooning in February in Phoenix/Mexico.

You got it. It's sort of in my 'back yard', not that far & a great ride on the back twisty road between Predator Ridge & Okanagan Centre. George Heiss, one of the sons & head wine maker is our soccer goalkeeper with the Winfield team...Okanagan old timer's league.

Few more shots... hope you bought a case or two of some of the Okanagan's finest. El Nihilo (spelling?) & Arrowleaf wineries are close by & also make first class wines. Actually, these days most any wine produced in the Okanagan is world class. Wasn't always the case, but Grey Monk is one of the oldest family owned operations & they kind of led the way out of the 'Baby Duck' & 'Lonesome Charlie' days! And now we have an award winning distiller in Vernon, Okanagan Spirits. If you're ever out this way again, worth checking out. Bring plenty of cash though...

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-f...o/P1070718.JPG

Moving to the Okanagan almost 10 years ago was a pretty good choice in my books. Before that I was a 'cubicle' person, like poor old 'tlhood' a few posts up^

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-V...o/P1070717.JPG

Ok, gotta go now & enjoy a sip of chilled Riesling on what remains of a hot afternoon....er, evening...

Waikiki Aquarium and Zoo are close to the beach, Diamondhead Crater, Polynesian Cultural Center are all good. We took a full day bus tour of the island which had lots of interesting stops and the tour guides are usually native Hawaiians so they give you a lot of great info. Pearl Harbor is must see also. Go to a luau one night as well. Oh, and see if you can find an ABC store!

hillegom 08-15-2014 04:18 AM

ABC lol
If you like snorkeling, go to hanauma bay.
http://www.hanauma-bay-hawaii.com/

You can take a bus (cheap). Go early in the morning and ask the driver when the last bus leaves. (important). Its very busy there, the snorkeling is better earlier than later.
As well, on the way back, ask the bus driver to let you know where the costco is, if you have a card. Cheap booze. Cheaper than duty free. Or ABC lol a close second.

I was watching Sharkweek stuff last night and ya, I'm not sure I would have even gotten in the water in that area...those sharks are mean looking!!!

sphelps 08-15-2014 05:15 PM

When I was in Hawaii there was a growing concern over the increased number of shark attacks but I also noticed the local aquariums are breeding and releasing turtles. As a result I saw a lot of turtles in the water, a lot...

I wonder why there are so many sharks around now....
