Topic: Aragonite - It sucks, use something else

I use white gravel intended for freshwater. Looks like the pea gravel they use for cichlids, just whiter. It's non-porous and easy to clean. It's also cheap as dirt.

Gone are the days of vacuuming the same 5"x5" spot for half an hour only to find that it is still laden with mystery debris. 10 minutes on a 72 gallon and it's clean as a whistle.

I recommend wholeheartedly. And don't buy into that pH/kH stabilizing crap. If the pH of your tank is low enough to dissolve aragonite, you have bigger problems on your hands.

I propose a gravel revolution. Who's with me?

"Down with aragonite! We want the White!"

Or... "White gravel! Definitely better than the rest!"

Or... Can someone more poetic and politically correct help me with a slogan?

Edit: I'd like to make accommodations for the bare bottom crowd. You are welcome here too.... Y'all can interpret that in any shape or fashion that your hearts most desire.

Madreefer 05-31-2014 03:55 AM

Let's see if we can make this thread 11 pages long like that other goofy thread. A guy asks for tips/hints bout a dragonet and maybe 5 replies. I guess bitching seems to be the flavour now a days.
My .02. White is right

Ok. Dragonet guy had solid answers only a couple of posts in. So all good.
Bitching thread is epic ridiculous.
Bare bottom is better. Are your wave makers the natural kind?
Sand in most cracks sucks, even for tough guys.

Slyguy00 05-31-2014 04:30 AM

lol bitching thread is closed now anyways, I'm sure it wont be long before it moves to this one.

intarsiabox 05-31-2014 04:36 AM

For Sale: One cup of high quality white Aragonite sand from an undisclosed island. $80/cup.
One cup of rich black sand from FtMac $25

My aragonite was 10 yrs old when I acquired it and my system is going on 5yrs. I've never vacuumed at all let alone a 5" x 5" spot. My tank is still fine. Haha. Albert, I don't think you're going to start a revolution. You did however provoke discussion. :)

You're what I'd call "lucky".

For the rest of us mere mortals who have to schlack all day against the evils of neverclean, aka aragonite, we just want some respite.

Bet if you were using FW gravel, you'd have exactly the same results.
