After materials, time, electricity, marketing and distribution costs, etc. it'll only end up costing him two or three dollars each even after he sells them ;)

The lathe is in the "machining room" of a shop I was a foreman at a few years ago, I have full access to the lathe, milling machine, and cnc plasma table

only if he values his own time at $1.00/hour. never cheeper doing them by hand than when they are done automated by bulk.

You can get a home bench top lathe for around $900 from Busy Bee tools. It won't have the tolerances to make engine parts or anything requiring tolerances tighter than +/- 1mil but they are fun to tinker on. You can make boxes, candlesticks, fittings, etc.

general has a better one for 2000$ that is umm, a tiny bit bigger than a bench top lathe

Are they that cheap? I priced some out a few years ago and thought they were well over 1000. Ill have to take another look at them, they would be so much fun to play around on.

I've made a few aquarium related custom items.

That is awesome! only 75lbs too which would be nice and easy to move around in the garage. The size is sure deceiving with the white background in the pictures!
