Fish dead.
So I did a water change a day ago, when I came back.
My yellow angelfish, clown, wrasse found dead. I checked the parameters Nitrate 5.0ppm Ammonia 0ppm Nitrite 0ppm Specific gravity 1.29 at 40ppt Temp 27.8c Yes the tank is pretty young... about 2 months old only. Fish gurus I need your guidance. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk |
The salinity seems high to me.

A little more detail perhaps
How big was wc. Ro water or tap Was it cold What's po4 Are you running a skimmer. ( imo brochures with lid on have little area for gas exchange Any signs of stress prior to Salinity is high |

Agreed it's a bit high. Just bring it down slowly and you'll be fine And IMHO 27.8c (82f) is a bit high as well, but that's just me Did you test your WC parameters before doing the WC ? It's always best to check before tossing the new water into your DT I always like to have my SG matching perfectly, and my temp very close, before dumping it in Beyond that, I like to keep an eye on my big 3 in case it'll upset my corals What kind of water are you using to make your new salt water (NSW)? Tap ? RO ? RODI ? What are you mixing it in, and if you're using a powerhead and/or heater in the container, are they intact ? |
I lost a bunch of fish to salinity. My tester broke and went from 1.024 to 1.029. Pretty much killed everything in my tank. Even after I caught it. Start taking out a cup at a time of water. Depending on size, and replace it with a cup of fresh. Slow enough to not shock them further but not to long as they are in Super salty water.

Tap water treated with prime
Warm water I am running a skimmer I would ve thought the inverts would go first... / corals What is po4? Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk |
PO4 is phosphate, yes salinity is high.
+1 on what gregzz4 said, best to test water b-4 the change. |
Inverts like salty. All my inverts survived, just the fish. Didn't have coral at that time so can't comment on that.

[quote=gregzz4;885157]I'll assume you meant 1.029 salinity ? Not 1.29
Yes 1.029 Agreed it's a bit high. Just bring it down slowly and you'll be fine And IMHO 27.8c (82f) is a bit high as well, but that's just me Lowered it to 75 f Did you test your WC parameters before doing the WC ? Yes Nitrate was high 5.0ppm Other than that everything was fine. It's always best to check before tossing the new water into your DT I always like to have my SG matching perfectly, and my temp very close, before dumping it in Beyond that, I like to keep an eye on my big 3 in case it'll upset my corals What kind of water are you using to make your new salt water (NSW)? Tap ? RO ? RODI ? Tap water with prime What are you mixing it in, and if you're using a powerhead and/or heater in the container, are they intact ? Mixed it in a bucket with power head. Im not sure if it makes a difference, I just started running carbon...

Carbon will help if there's something in the water
Lowering your temp from 82 to 75 is a bit drastic :surprise: |
know you been up for a bit, any chance mis-dosed the Prime?
|
I just checked the PO4 0.25ppm

What test kits are you using
|
can't say I've ever come across high PO4 being harmful to fish, just causing algae and stunting corals
|
Reef master kit didn't know it was in my stash when I bought the package.

What are you testing your salinity with?
|
Vertex refractometer

What temperature do you run your tank at normally? I agree with Greg a big temp swing can be a bad thing. Constant steady temperature of what ever you choose to run at is the important thing even when doing your water changes. Try and get your new water parameters as close as possible to your system before putting it in. Salinity was on the high side for sure. Good luck, hope this helps.

Thanks everyone!

i dont think the temperature or high salinity killed the fish !
cuz i have had a 29g bio cube too , my salinity been up to 1.030 and ( 84F ) my fish and coral were always fine when my water temp went high i put Ice in my the back of my tank lol it worked and check ur PH sometime it could drop fast to low and kill ur fish and coral and i put fish coral in my 2 days old RSM250 all the fish and coral are fine if you need help let me know im by surrey central |
Another big one to check is Alkalinity. If there was a larger ALK swing, it can affect everything in the tank as well.
Also, get an RO/DI unit when you can. It will save you many, many, many headaches. .25 for PO4 will cause nothing but problems with coral growth and algae. Best to run GFO in a reactor to help reduce that dramatically. |
