Coolest fish I have ever owned

I thought I would share my cute little fish, I currently have three Rhinopias Frondosa and a warty frogfish. I definitely recommend these fish for anyone wanting something different and unique in their tanks. The Frogfish is getting his own tank, and the Red, Brown and Yellow Rhinopias will be staying together in an upgraded tank once on frozen.Hope you like the pictures:)

Yes very cool but don't typically last long in captivity.

hillbillyreefer 01-09-2014 08:09 PM

I hope they do well for you. Beautiful fish!

Magickiwi 01-09-2014 08:12 PM

Don't listen to him. They are beautiful! Enjoy them :)

Saw this at a pet store recently with 1000 price tag

Crazy looking fish, how often are you feeding them?

Oh oh, that purple one is some nice. I can hear the wheels turning JJ ;-)

SeaHorse_Fanatic 01-10-2014 12:42 PM

Real beauties you have there. Good luck.

J.J 01-10-2014 03:43 PM

That purple is amazing, they usually go for high prices like that, I was quoted 2800 for a purple one in December from an online vendor- makes you pause at that price!

haha John I already have an order in for a purple, Ill find out in the next two weeks if it has come in- CANT wait!

I feed them 3 times a week, right now unfortunately still on feeders and not eating frozen but they will get there. They really are amazing fish with a lot of personality, they follow me around the tank and come to my hand- just like venomous aquatic puppies.

I take a million videos of them and just recently was able to catch them yawning on video, I sat ready and watching for over an hour last night.

don.ald 01-10-2014 03:47 PM

What are you feeding?

J.J 01-10-2014 03:50 PM

Gut loaded ghost shrimp, I have freshwater feeders as well- but its not healthy for them to eat them long term. The Angler eats off a stick now the Rhinos are just a bit slower taking to frozen foods.

I see wheels turning here too!

Beautiful fish!

corpusse 01-10-2014 04:12 PM

Beautiful fish! All of them!

You should use shore shrimp instead of ghost shrimp. They look exactly the same but they are marine. You can purchase them here :

http://www.aquaculturestore.com/Shore-Shrimp.html

They are florida based but will ship to Canada. When I used to have cuttlefish and octopus they supplied me.

J.J 01-10-2014 04:41 PM

awesome thanks for the link, these were all I could immediately get my hands on so I grabbed these- When I run out I will give these a try if I still need to feed live.

Could you feed salt water mollies? Or still considered not healthy as original freshwater?

Im assuming these are not reef safe....

J.J 01-11-2014 08:58 PM

They will eat what they can fit in their mouths, but they don't harm coral- (alot of people have different opinions on the term "reef safe"- to me it means coral safe.)

tang daddy 01-15-2014 06:27 AM

Beautiful species tank bro, kinda cool to see a tank so clean and dedicated to scorpion species and frog fish

J.J 01-15-2014 01:55 PM

(Girl not bro lol)

Thank you:) They were my goal for a long time- but finding someone willing to get them/could get them was difficult. It took me 9 months maybe 10 to get them, so when I was told there were three available I grabbed them.

I did get another a Rhinopias Eschmeyeri that was beautiful but unfortunately didn't ship well and died:( I was crushed but the vendor is replacing him and has ordered me a Purple Rhinopias Frondosa so hopefully I can get that one with no weather delays.

Thank you for the kind comment- Hopefully I am able to locate lots of macro algae to fill in this tank :D

J.J 01-15-2014 10:41 PM

Here are some more recent pictures, showing the current colors

you can just flick through them to see them all

tang daddy 01-23-2014 12:17 AM

Sorry I ASSumed you were a bro when you were the opposite. Not a lot of women in this hobby. I've only met a handful but its a hobby for anyone young old guy girl black white and purple.

Either way awesome tank, why not add some easier corals like Zoas and mushrooms? Do you not like keeping coral? I am sure with your husbandry you'd be able to keep corals with your eyes closed....

J.J 01-23-2014 12:45 AM

I love corals and am planning on filling iT wiTh mushrooms and macros, working on iT now.

I have several aquariums, and one is a reef:D loTs of marine here lol

jonn46 01-23-2014 12:51 AM

Tang,
JJ is being modest, she is one of the gurus around here. I am constantly bugging her for info :-)

J.J 01-24-2014 01:50 PM

Haha your too kind! I enjoy your questions, that's how we learn in this hobby is from each other so its not "bugging" at all:D

Took some new pictures of my creatures as well as my two new additions, a dwarf zebra lion fish and an Inimicus didactylus. Here are some new pictures

J.J.,

You have by far the coolest collection of poisonous &/or ambush predators I know. Very, very cool. Thanks for sharing with us. Love all the pics and its nice to know there are people out there who really appreciate and are devoted to keeping these unique creatures.

Anthony

J.J 01-24-2014 05:01 PM

Thank you for enjoying them:razz:

This is currently the start of my collection, I hope to see it grow to include other Rhinopias, dwarf lions and other little scorpions, but like all things it takes time.

They have changed a lot since getting to me, the three Rhinopias have all changed colors slightly and become a lot friendlier to anyone outside the glass where as before they would act defensively. Now they climb all over each other to be the first and closest one to you. I hope to eventually get them to the point where they will eat out of my fingers like my last dwarf lion.. patience, patience lol

Thanks for enjoying the pictures and videos:D
