Jebao WP-25
 

I just received my wavemaker from Kraken and it arrived very well packaged and with the new controller with the additional modes as well. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet but if anyone is looking for one they are in stock at Kraken. It's a little larger than I expected, when looking at the comparison picture of the WP-40 to the WP-25 the WP-25 looks very tiny. I think it is more that the WP-40 is just very large. The dimensions that Jebao lists for this pump is for the powerhead portion only and doesn't include the holder. Actual measurements for the portion that goes inside the tank are closer to 10cm x 7 1/2 cm, so still fairly small just not as small as my MP-10's 6cm x 4cm inside tank foot print. The construction and material quality actually look pretty good, better than the pictures make it out to be. The connection from the pump to the control box is a water proof screw-on fitting even though the cord is over 6 feet long so I thought this was nice touch. Sticky Velcro is also included to mount the controller. There is some type of rubber lubricant on the isolators so I'll be washing the unit of in some vinegar before it goes in the tank.

Yah wp40 is HUGE! To the users of wp40, 25 would look tiny actually :razz: do keep us posted about how it works :)

What do you mean with new controller and additional modes?

i beleive they first came out with a controller with 6 modes, and now they come out with 12. but dont quote me on that

For those that have multiple pumps do you use one controller for all pumps or are they controlled with each individual controller?

i only have 1 pump, thinking about a second, but i would run 2 controllers on 2 different settings.

maybe they make a splitter to connect multiple pumps?

Yup. Each pump has their individually controller. There are threads where people have been able to mod the wire to fit multiple pumps to an apex though.

Well I finally hooked up the WP-25 tonight. When I first plugged it in it defaulted to Else mode on speed 3 (S3) which is 50% of max and it started blowing junk out of my rocks like crazy, blew a wrasse across the tank and ticked of my frog spawn. I should mention the tank is only a 29g standard size. So I pointed it more over the rocks than in front and started playing with the settings. I only have it placed about 2" below the water surface to make the pump less noticeable in the tank. H1, H2 & H3 are just a steady flow at 100%, 75% and 50% respectively so that's pretty standard and not what I'm after. The next 3 modes (W1, W2 & W3) are used for creating waves. This is were the dial on the controller also comes into play, it allows you to control how quickly the pump turns on and off to create different wave patterns. I was hoping it would control the speed in some of the modes but it does not. I like W1 set at a quick wave pattern, it is fairly gentle and I tuned it to just have a small surface wave but it creates a lot of back and forth flow through the entire tank. Larger waves can easily be obtained with W1 as well. Again I have it only on the slowest speed as S1 and S2 are too much for a small tank. W2 and W3 are more wave modes that seem to "pull" a lot more. I would have to move the pump further down in the tank to utilize these modes as they cause a vortex to the surface and suck down a bunch of air causing bursts of micro bubbles. No doubt that these 2 modes would cause a huge amount of flow through the tank if the pump were moved down but even on the lowest speed it is too powerful. The last mode is "Else" (don't ask me why it is named this) which is a random flow mode that is really good for blowing stuff out of the rocks so I would imagine great for nutrient export. Again, even at the lowest speed it is blowing my frog spawn (which is on the opposite side of the tank) around and it is not happy. The last thing on the controller I want to mention is the photocell sensor used to slow the flow down when it gets dark. I ended up not using it as it just sets the pump to mode H3 which is a steady flow at 50% which is harsher than the W1 setting I have chosen to stick with for now. I may have to get the variable power supply to utilize this pump to it's fullest on a small tank but I'm probably going with a larger set up in the spring anyway so I may just leave it as is since I'm quite happy with the flow right now. As for the pump itself, it is virtually silent with only a slight whirring that you have to put your ear up to the glass to hear. The magnet is powerful enough for my glass and the direction of flow is easily placed to just about anywhere you want and it stays put.

Really my only complaints are the lack of any variable speed control built in and the size of the unit. With my background painted black it isn't really all that noticeable though. As for reliability, only time will tell as I have only been running it for about 2 hours now. As it stands right now for the price it seems like a great bargain but for the extra $10 I would recommend the variable power supply to give you better control over the flow, maybe in larger tanks it wouldn't be needed.

my koralias 750,1000,1400s all die after one year's use more or less while my tunze pumps are still fine after 5 years continuous use. thinking of switching to wp pumps when my current phs give up the ghost just wandering about wp pump reliability?

Well, I have very good success with them thus far and no issues. I am using them on all my stock tanks and my main display as well. Im selling them so I may be twitting my own horn! Im sure however that others who bought it should have a good experience with them too! :mrgreen:
